Navy hasn't seen last of 'Enterprise' name
A good name.By Hugh Lessig, hlessig@dailypress.com | 757-247-7821 4:21 p.m. EST, December 1, 2012 — The Navy bid farewell to one USS Enterprise on Saturday, but it promised to welcome another. The world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has borne the name Enterprise for 51 years. It was formally taken out of service Saturday at a ceremony that reflected on its decades of service, but the emotional high point came when talk turned to the future. In a taped message, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced that CVN 80, a Gerald R. Ford class carrier slated to be built at the Newport News shipyard, would be named Enterprise. Thousands of people who had come from all over the country to see the "Big E" erupted in cheers. Eric McCoy came from Ohio to see the ship he served on from 1962 to 1965. Now nearly 70 years old and recovering from quadruple bypass surgery, he vowed to return when the new Enterprise is welcomed into service. I'll be here," he said, "with bells on." CVN-80 will be the ninth ship to bear the name. Construction is not expected to begin for several years. Nearly 12,000 people had been expected to attend the inactivation ceremony. There should always be an Enterprise in the fleet. Too bad they didn't follow historical naming conventions with the other nuclear carriers. |

A nice news for a bitter day, still now we'll have 13 years without an Enterprise beign underway somewhere out the sea. |

I hope that the old Big E's island is at least saved as a memorial, a very historic ship. |

History repeats itself. When the USS Enterprise was de-commissioned (CV-6) there was talk about making it a museum ship-and that iconic ship was converted into razor-blades. Now the US have a second chance in preserving an iconic USS Enterprise (CVN-65). Lets us all hope they will take this chance. |

Her island is going to supposed to be removed and preserved, with Newport News cutting down in to de-core her which will result in large amounts of her flight deck, and two decks bellow her hanger deck being cut away to complete the process. In short, they can't turn her into a museum ship. It would be a hard sell anyway as there are just too many museum ships around these days (not that I wouldn't have one of the Essexs and two of the Iowas scrapped to save her, but the first part precludes that).

Have to agree with Tim; not sure why we need four Iowa museums. Surely one or two is enough? |

Saving the E as a museum will be difficult. There won`t be much left as almost the entire ship will be cut apart to get the reactors out. |
