Made a trip to Groton Sub base to see USS Nautilus. Well worth the trip, although the reactor area was off limits, got a good feel for the sub. Seemed to be much roomier that the other subs I've been on. Heres a couple of pics I took.

Had a great to chat to a verteran from Nautilus, who said a lot of the missions they would hang around in the White Sea listening to Soviet subs.

Thanks for sharing those photos with us mate. I spent my first year in the RAN (1987) qualifying for service in Oberon submarines and the Nautilus looked so much more user friendly, not to mention no diesel air :D And we didn't have Walter Matthau as the cook

I didn't end up in submarine service as my ears had issues equalising when the boats were submerged.

Reminds me of the time I took a tour of the Albacore in Portsmouth NH.

Hehe, yeah, the dummies were a bit odd. This guy seemed to be propped up against the sink, a bit half cut.

I can't imagine working on subs. What was the longest you stayed under for?

5 weeks. Only came up to PD (periscope depth) to fire up the diesels to recharge the batteries (and air supply).

That's actually USS X-1, a research sub, never commissioned for the US Navy.
