I suppose I should've asked this earlier given that I'm looking at a July-August timeframe at the lastest.

But anyway I'd like to know what you guys have for cruise recommendations, particularly for Alaskan cruises. I've asked a few members already privately but I'd like to open it up now.

I've only been on a ferry twice in my live, and a took a short ride on a paddle boat up and down the Ohio.

The ferry was in Iceland, which wasn't to bad, though I don't think you'd want to travel to Iceland to ride a boat to giant lava rock.

I suppose you could go with one of the big name cruise lines like Royal Caribbean or Carnival. I have a buddy who took a cruise with Carnival and he said it was okay, bit crowded though. As for the title of this thread, I can't resist: "The only stupid questions are those that are go unasked."

Carnival
Haha, no offense to you, but I've already ruled out Carnival. I think a 6-day stay at a Motel 8 would be just as effective :P

Been on a Carnival cruise to the Caribbeans a few years back, and my only advise is go for the smaller ships, if you can afford it that is, as they tend to be pricey. If you are going for cruise on a budget look for deals with Royal Caribbeans or Celebrity, both lines have a good reputation regarding their "floatels".
I also suggest the following site to help in your decision making http://www.cruisepeople.com

Thanks, that's actually pretty helpful. Budget actually isn't much of an issue but it's something I never thought about, so I'll look into it. But the people whom I'm doing this for don't think smaller ships are safe or sanitary but some of the reports they've been reading about them vs. the "floatels" seem to be changing their minds.

The fact is, all incidents reported concerned the bigger ships, i.e Costa Concordia for instance, and never the smaller ships, like Seabourne Spirit and the like, just to ease your friends minds concerning the ships safety.

Well, there have been a couple of incidents involving small Arctic and Antarctic cruise ships
