I was just reading about that, it seems they can not find who originally had ownership claims to the vessel, all that is known is that it was sold to be scrapped shortly before the disaster.

I thought in the article is said that they had contacted the owners but that they don't want it back (??) It would be strange if you could absolve yourself of responsibility like that. I'm sure they must have made a claim on the insurance when it vanished.

I don't think that they boarded it... A Canadian vessel came to see if they could salvage it but after they couldn't the USCG vessel continued with what it was going to do and fill the Tsunami boat full of holes.
