Post subject:  Anniversary of Black Saturday

A day late but I suppose its still relevant. On the 7th of February, 2009, after a long period of 35-45+ celsius days in south -east Australia, a huge wind(100-120kph) picked up and on that day a series of lightning strikes, arson and power line damage created a super group of fires which just about burned everything in Victoria's central districts. Unfortunately 173 people lost their lives on that day and the ensuing aftermath, some 400+ injured. The town of Marysborough (which was one of the prettiest towns in Australia I must attest) was basically wiped off the map by the blaze.

I'm sure its a day branded on the hearts of many Victorians and Australians especially those who were there on the day. I myself was south of a major fire front on a relative's property and while we couldn't see the blaze for most of the day, the embers didn't stop raining down for hours, along with a constant roar of the fire and the smoke just blotted out so much. Hopefully we'll never see a buchfire that bad again.

In memory of those lost.

I'd forgotten about this one - such is the progression of disasters; and I recall this was deliberately lit? Having once faced a bushfire (Serpentine WA 1992 if my memory serves me) and having to literally run for my life, I can attest to the incredible force and energy of these monsters - they act like living things, feeding as they speed. I just hope that the good people of Victoria have mangaged to rebuild.
