I'm currently in Middletown, CT for a couple of weeks. I'm really hoping to pay a visit to USS Massachusetts at Battleship Cove. Only stumbling block would be the other half. Just wondering if anyone has been there and is it worth the visit. I love wandering around these old warships. I've seen USS Intrepid in NYC, thats definitely worth a visit.

Happy New Year Everyone.

Had the same problem when I was in New York, and wanted to see USS Inerpid. Solved that by giving the other half a day at Macy's the big one near Madison Square Garden.

Thats good thinking. Not sure if theres anything like macy's near this place, but I'm sure I can find something to temp her on this trip :)

I've been onboard her sister ship Alabama in Mobile. If you have never been in a 16 inch gun turret its worth going.

I'm hoping to get the full run of the ship like on HMS Belfast in London, that was excellent.

I was once on USS Iowa when she visited Portsmouth many years ago but didn't get to see inside the turrets :(

I saw the Alabama from the highway while I was moving from Texas to Florida. If it wasn't getting late and I was in need of a hotel to stay for the night I would have loved to have gone aboard her.

Haven't been to the Alabama or North Carolina yet (on my "to do" list, living here in Georgia), but I did visit the Missouri a few times when she was still in Bremerton back in the 60's and early 70's. I don't know if it really counts as touring a battlewagon, but I've been to the Arizona too.

I know I sound like a billboard, or maybe a commercial... but I have to admit that touring the Alabama and Drum is pretty much a yearly tradition for me since age 5. I can think of no better way to spend a day.

I've always wanted to visit the Texas and the North Carolina.

The two ships that I will have to visit before I die are the Olympia and the Mikasa.

It may well be too late for the Olympia. I believe that tours have been stopped on it back in October or November and the current owners need to make several millions in repairs to her they don't have the money for. Another group wants to buy it, but the current owners are reluctant to sell. Right now there is even some discussion about sinking her as an artificial reef, which in my opinion would be a tragedy.

In this economic climate, the loss of the Olympia is a possibility. If the repairs are to the bottom, then the Mikasa example might be the best bet- dig a channel, float her in, pump out the water, pump in concrete, and call it a day.
