Post subject:  Royal Ship Svärdet Found!

Today I read on my net homepaper Sydsvenskan, that the Swedish Royal Ship, Svärdet has finally been found at the SE corner of the tip of the island of Öland, Sweden.

This ship, a contemporary of Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter's De Zeven Provincien sank in battle in the afternoon of 1st June, 1676, during the Scanian War (1675-79). She was listed as carrying 82 guns on two complete decks. I've made a reconstruction of this ship, based on her known dimensions, country of origin of her Master Shipwright and the fact that, in 1667 she was lengthened to cram in up to 90 guns. Also I used as a reference guide the paintings and tapestries made by Claus Möinichen in Copenhagen.
Built in 1661-63, she must've resembled the DZP quite closely, but after her rebuilding she was more similar to Cornelis M. Tromp's Gouden Leeuw, featuring a complete, decked-over weather deck, instead of the open waist of the DZP. This weather deck can be seen on the Vasan, and appears to have been something of a Swedish trademark for big capital ships of the period.

I hope, once my printer and scanner are up running, I can scan my reconstruction, and then, hopefully I might draw it in either SB or FD-scale.

Her dimensions were: Length over the posts: 49.00 m, moulded beam: 12.63 m, depth: 5.80 m. Burthen: 1,700 tons (more than the Vasan!) Calculated displacement: 2,100 tons. Crew 600.

She was the flagship of quite a few notable Swedish admirals, the last of whom was Adm. Claas Uggla.

Interesting. Any word on what state she's in? As I understand it she was first pounded to kindling and then accidentally set on fire by a Dutch fireship.

Correction firstly on a fee facts: moulded beam 12.65m, guns: 94 after rebuilding, though at Öland she carried 86.
Yes Alvama, she fought extremely hard in her last battle, and yes it was the fireship t'Hoen that burned her in a willful act of disobedience. The underwater photos appear to show her in a fairly, surpringingly we-preserved state.
Yes I've drawn her myself out of the few sources available.
