Both the French and Spanish navy fought bravely and tenaciously; this was no easy victory. The genius of Nelson was to take the initial casualties, so as to be in position to dictate the later course of the battle. On the broader issue, Napolean never fully grasped the use of seapower, being essentially a continental commander; and in this he foreshadowed Hitler who likewise did not have a fully global perspective of warfare and how seapower could influence it.
