Not really from what I read, the Trident replacement's getting funded and they're getting the Nimrods as well. Unless it's be updated in the past 24 hours with the Destroyers getting axed, the RN's got what it wanted.

a fleet is more then its SSBN's and Heavy carriers. It needs frigates, Subs , OPV's, and Auxiliaries to meet its commitments and support the capital ships.

Nimrods are gone, as well as the Harriers in favor for the Tornados, which are(or were) being replaced by the Typhoon. So the RN will be without planes for their carriers.

Who wants to bet that someone will use that fact to kill the carriers as useless ships? <_< Serious, go ahead and take the Tornados, which will cost 7.5bil Pounds to operate over the next 5 years, out of service and keep the Harriers, which would cost under 1bil Pounds to operate over the next 5 years, so the Carriers will have planes. UK saves more money, RN has useful Carriers, and the RAF no longer has to deal with obsolete Tornados.

I thought the Tornadoes and the Harriers were both going? But yes, it will mean that when the carriers are commisioned there will not be any aircraft to operate from then; at least not until the JSF is cleared for service...... The carriers could not be cancelled because it would cost more to do so than to continue building them, both financially and politically.

Wont it be like a gap of 3 years without fixed wing assets on the Queen Elizabeth?

The RN could lease Super Hornets in the interim. That might slow the program down enough that EMALS gets put on QE.

It also runs the risk that you don't get JSF on your carrier at all.

I'd rather see (from my point of view at least) the aircraft carrier having at least some capability rather than waiting for JSF to materialize.

The Royal Navy's flagship aircraft carrier, HMS Ark Royal, will be scrapped almost immediately under the defence review. The government's cutting defence spending by 8% with parts of the military likely to be made smaller. David Cameron's given guarantees that the mission in Afghanistan will not be damaged but there will be cuts in military spending and there'll be less money to go round in the years ahead. There will be fewer soldiers in the army and fewer tanks and planes are likely but the scrapping of Ark Royal will help pay for two new aircraft carriers. The defence secretary Liam Fox argued deeper cuts could have "grave consequences".

This is news doing the rounds here down under - by the sounds of it, the Ark Royal is to be removed from service immeditely. With Invincible laid-up, how much longer will Illustrious last? How will the RN maintain their competency in carrier ops if they don't have any left?
