1.) If the thugs in New Orleans can put bullet holes into a Blackhawk that make the pilots return to base, you cannot tell me with any degree of truth that those same birds are not vulnerable to the much better equipped Somali pirates.
While they are probably better armed, they are also completely untrained and standing in a dinghy that's dancing around in the middle of a big ocean and they have zero cover. So far they have never come close to hitting a helo due to their aforementioned ability to stay out of assault rifle range. And unlike the helo in New Orleans the Helo crew knows exactly where the bad guys are and that they are likely to return fire. And they are cleared to return said fire.
2.) A helo showing up is not going to deter a serious pirate; they know exactly what you and I have have pointed out- that a chopper alone cannot stop them without sinking the ship they are taking, and that any mothership will be hard-pressed to get there before the deed is done.
Again operational experience proves you wrong. With almost no exceptions the pirates have always retreated when a helicopter has shown up, unless they are far enough along with the attack that they've started shooting and/or throwing grapples etc. In those situation the helicopter is allowed to open fire.
3.) Asian pirates are certainly the nastier bunch- which is all the more reason for nations to band together to end the plague. With the economic problems we are going through right now, there might not be a lot of will... but we'll have to do it one day. They are also one of the reasons I say the only reason to stop the pirates is the historically proven methods- bullets, or nooses and gibbets.
Except it didn't stop them. In Asia it didn't have any real effect, they avoided European targets because they had an annoying tendency to carry and godawful amount of guns. In later times it has had more to do with strategy. Since Asian pirates tend to sell everything including the ships themselves, attacking a big containership, or anything else that isn't a small coaster for that matter, would be pointless since they wouldn't have a clue about what to do with it.
PS- Pirates like choke points, so you don't police the whole ocean... you police the choke points. Forcing the pirates to give up the easy, fertile grounds causes them to be far less of a threat.
Again experience doesn't agree with you. There has been reports of attacks as far east as Sri Lanka.
