Post subject: | Viksund Boat of Norway |
Viksund Boats AS aka Viksund Yacht AS aka Viksund Bat AS aka Viksund AS. With sister company Viksund ASIA LTD. It's an Norwegian company that started in the late 60's. building GRP boats. many of the boats they build is considered as an classic today, and some was from when the Prototype was launched. They even got one Fishing boat preserved by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage. since Viksund created the modern fishing boat, that we see so many of today in Norway, and they are all based on the same basic layout. bridge and crew compartment in front, fish well/tank in center and engine room in rear, some with a V-gear, and some with and some almost directly connected to the propeller. Viksund have gone from just an pioneer company in Norway, shocking everybody with something new, to become the world biggest boat builder in the world in the 80's, but due to the Norwegian Bank (DNB), some also work as an national bank and was one of the biggest finance team to Viksund, went bankrupt in late 80's, they took with them Viksund, some had big loans at that time, financing, an new factory in Portugal and had just finished it's factory in North Norway. they was also establishing and forward factory in USA. They was at that time trying to get an better grip on the international marked. they restarted the company again, and have had after that had two bankruptcy on them due to a very tight marked, and extreme Norwegian tax (taxes can be so extreme sometimes that an Volvo engine can cost up to three and four time as much in Norway compared to Sweden!). Today they are owned by Skorgenes. but are operating under there own name, and are expecting to do well now, since Skorgenes have factory in Poland and that will help with getting down the build cost of the larger Viksund vessels. The History will be updated as soon as I can, to an better version. Boats: Viksund Sabbcruiser: Viksund robaat (Rowboat) Viksund combi 25: Viksund 25 MS Viksund 25 Columbi Seagoing vessel build to withstand everything. with watertight/airtight compartments. keep floating even if the lounge, cabin and engine room is filled with water. This is an boat you can take out in the worst weather and survive! these boats type have created many story's about them self (something I will come back to later). Materiall: Glass fiber Length. 7.5m beam. 2.40m draft. 0.95m to 1.05m Weight: 3000kg, 3300 with 300kg ballast, 3500kg with 500kg ballast. engine: 20-30 hp Speed: 8+ knots with modern 28 hp Yanmar 3GYM30, 6 knots with 70's 25 hp Volvo Penta MD2B. hull thickness: 33 to 35mm all around, with up to 50mm in some areas. superstructure thickness. from 11 to 25mm thickness. Viksund 27 series Viksund 27 was the backbone of Viksund production together with Viksund 31 Goldfish. Viksund 27 come i variation of with or without sail or as fishing boats. they was know for there big volume, large aft deck, and an excellent sea-keeping and toughness. the sail version of these vessel wasn't the fastest sailboat. as a vessel without sail, these boats had only 400 kg ballast while sail version had a 1000 kg ballast (added steal keel). Viksund said that by adding ballast to the hull the gave these slow boats an better sea-keeping. ----- In the early years Viksund had problem selling grp boats, people was believing that grp boats was a dead trap that could'n withstand the harsh Norwegian weather, so one day Viksund had one 27 Columbie dropped of an mountain and then had a couple of men hammering on it with 10 kg sledge hammers, except some broken glass, the grp hull and superstructure was still intact, and after some repairs to the Gel-coat, the boat was sold and are still sailing today! ----- In 1977 An fabric new 27 MS fall of an cargo ship during an winter-storm, for only be found by the Norwegian Navy a couple days later. The vessel was still intact with no damage at all, even those strengthened windows the 27 series received in the later years wasn't damaged. And she was also totally dry, so the Navy put an crew onboard, started up the engine, and drove it in to harbor, after an inspection, she was delivered to customer. (No repairs was needed!) ----- Back in the 80's and Norwegian took an 27 sjark (fishing vessel) and crossed the Atlantic to New York, with only one modification, more fuel and water, and a big cooler down in the fishing well. As he that drove the boats said: "all I had to do was start the engine, point the bow in correct direction, and lean back and relax. Even in bad weather!" ----- Viksund 27 MS Weight: about 4000kg Material: GRP Length: 8.05 meter Beam: 2.85 meter draft: 1 meter (depending on what type of ballast she have) hull thickness: 35 mm in hull side and bottom, with 40 mm in strengthened area. It gave them more space under deck, the new hull gave them space to move the engine further down in the hull giving more space on deck and in the hold, she had an also better sea capability than on any earlier vessel in the Viksund family. The vessel was an success from day one, looked as an classic, was in a class of it's own compared to it competitors and sat the standard on how a modern fishing boat should be. there was build several thousand of them delivered every where in the world: USA, Africa, Asia, etc. ------- Viksund delivered an 31 Sjark to an mountain ocean in Africa, but there was no way up there, so Viksund rented some equipment and made a road up that mountain. ------- A Viksund 31 Sjark capsized last year, due to overload. but thanks to smart design from Viksund, the ship was still floating up side down, even after rescue crew used and chainsaw to the hull to get out crew. the vessel was token on land, hull repaired, engine and gear repaired and replacement of all electric system. And are still in use today. ------- Viksund 31 Sjark aka Viksund 31 (fishing boat) Weight: 3500 to 4500 kg (modified version could weight up to 5000 kg) Material: GRP Length: 9.40 meter Beam: 3.10 meter Draft: 1.20 meter hull thickness: 35 mm in hull side and bottom, with 40 mm in strengthened area.
