Not just that, the sale of jet-engines was to raise cash too. The implications went much further than you think. The US never trusted the UK again and put diplomatic pressure on Britain, the US imposed a jet-ban on Latin America and several British export deals in the early 1950s were scuppered due to the British government's attempt to not alienate the Americans (even non jet-powered exports were hindered). When it came to the Avon powered Comet II the US pulled out all the stops to stop ANY exports of Comet. The US tried to invoke agreements made during the war that neither US or UK could export advanced tech developed jointly during the war, the British rightly said the Avon was not developed under the wartime agreements. The Comet crashes came just before exports of the Comet II began and possible diplomatic action was begun by the Americans. By the time the Comet IV was ready the Soviets had developed their own axial-jets and the Americans were catching up fast. In the 1960s the Americans tried to scupper Concorde for a variety of reasons but Britain managed to export the Hawker Siddeley Trident to China with US electronics fitted by some dodgy-dealing that the Americans never found out about until later. So that desire to be friendly with all nations and get some much-needed money in the late 1940s began a whole chain of events.

Indeed I share Bill's frustration with what wasn't designed. By this time work was underway on what became the Hunter, the Swift and the Javelin. All next-generation stuff but as the Hawker P.1081 showed, the interim types could have filled a useful role. Of course lack of resources meant further delays to the Hunter etc. But it shows what might easily have been done. A more swept-wing and a reheated Tay might have been great in the CXP-1001 too.

Thanks. It is an interesting plane.
The belly camouflage was a pain in the but to draw though.
