Boeing 777:

Another widely represented model in Koutei Koku's fleet is the Boeing 777. The airline owned 52 triple-sevens (14 777-200, 12 777-200ER, 7 777-300 and 19 777-300ER), with 46 currently in service. In addition to them another 38 airframes are currently on order (4 777-300ER, 5 777-8 and 29 777-9). Koutei was one of the nine airlines (together with All Nippon Airways, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and United Airlines) that worked togwther with Boeing to design the twinjet.

Koutei Koku ordered twelve 777-200 aircrafts for domestic market in 1992 and recieved the first unit in late 1995. Deliveries lasted until 1998. Two extra airframes were ordered in 2001 and delivered in 2004. The airplanes are witted with a three-class configuration with 390 seats (39 Business, 10 Premium Economy, 341 Economy). THe airline is currently in the process of retiring the type, replaciing it with the 787-9. The two youngest airframes will not be retired for the time being.

The stretched 777-300 was ordered by the airline shortly after its launch. Five were delivered in 1998-99, with another two in 2003. They serve on the domestic market like the smaller -200s, and replaced old 747-100 and 747-100BSRs. The -300s can carry 506 passengers in three classes (46 Business, 20 Premium Economy, 440 Economy). In 2002 one of Koutei 777-300s recieved a special livery as it flew the Kokoan National Football Team to Korea and Japan. The team took part in their first FIFA World Cup, although it didn't progress beyond the group stage. All seven 777-300s are still flying with Koutei Koku, they are planned for retirement starting in 2018/2019, when the first 787-10 on order will be delivered.

Third variant, and first long-range, the 777-200ER was first ordered in 1997 with a batch of ten. Because of the 1997 Asian economic crisis deliveries started in 2000, and following the post 9/11 air traffi slump they were further deferred, so that it took until 2007 to have all ten airframes in service. Two more were ordered later and delivered in 2012. The 777-200ER partly replaced the 747-200 on international routes. The twinjet is fitted with 306 seats in a four-class setup (6 First, 42 Business, 34 Premium Economy, 224 Economy). There are no plans to retire the type yet.

In 2002 Koutei ordered sixteen 777-300ERs, initially as a dedicated replacement for the ageing 747-200 fleet. Ultimately, due to evolving market demands and fuel prices, the aircraft ended up also replacing most of the 747-300s on the international market. They fit 309 passengers in four classes (8 First, 55 Business, 28 Premium Economy, 218 Economy), operating in Asian and Transpacific markets. In 2014 the airline ordered seven more airframes, with three of them delivered by 2017. Two more will join the fleet in 2018 and another two in 2019, bridging the gap to the 777-9 introduction.

Koutei also ordered 29 777-9, with another 11 on option, in 2015 to expand the international fleet and replace the 747-400. in June 2017 the airline also ordered 5 ultra-long-range 777-8, with an option for another five.

Airbus A330:

Six Airbus A330-300 were ordered in 1994 to serve the domestic market and replace the used A300-B4s and were recieved them between 1996 and 1998. Another seventeen were ordered in early 2001 to superseede the other B4s, yet deliveries were deferred and started only in 2006 following reduced market demand. All second batch planes ultimately entered service by 2012, bringing the type total to 23 airframes. The A330-300s are fitted with the recent standard domestic three-class configuration and can carry 346 passengers (34 Business, 18 Premium Economy, 294 Economy). The six airframes of the first batch are planned to be retired in 2018 and following years when 10 A330-900Neo will be delivered. The second batch is planned to keep serving well past 2025.

In 2001, other than the ssecond batch of domestic planes, Koutei also ordered fifteen A330-200s to replace the ageing DC-10s in international service. The planes were delivered between 2002 and 2006 and, like the plane they replaced, mostly serve the airline routes to South America and Australian/Recherchean ones. They seat 221 passengers in a four-class layout (5 First, 30 Business, 28 Premium Economy, 158 Economy). There are no plans to retire the type before the mid 2020s. The airline is currently considering wether to get more 787-9 or A350-900 as the eventual replacement.

In addition to the passenger variant, Koutei Koku also ordered the cargo model A330-200F for it's thinner freight routes. The airliner can carry up to 70.000kg of payload to a distance of 7.400km. The first Rolls-Royce-Powered jet in the airline inventory had it first airframe delivered in late 2013, followed by a second in early 2015. Koutei's satisfaction with the type led it to order another four. Two have been delivered in 2017, offsetting the retirement of the last 747-400BCF, delivery date of the other two is not set for the time beign. It could be made either in 2018 or 2019 as a result of traffic demands.

I'm just kind of curious why the A330Fs has a livery unique to the type, or is that the 'new new' Koutei livery?

Just a variant of the standard livery exclusively for cargo planes, introduced in 2012 with the delivery of the 747-8F (so you'll see it again on the freighter when i'll do the 748 post).

De Havilland Canada DHC-8 / Bombardier Dash-8:

To start the retirement of the venerable NAMC-YS-11 Koutei koku ordered four DHC-8-300s in the mid 90s, recieving all in 1997-98. The Canadian-built turboprops were fitted with 50 seats in a single class. The airline started retiring the Dash-300s in 2015 after the acquisition of Kita no Kokukaisha to cover it's regional segment. All four were out of the fleet by December 2016.

At first the number of DHC-8s did not completely offset the retirement of the YS-11, as the fourteen retired airframes were replaced by just four new turboprops. To regain capacity in regional routes and completely cover the retirement of the last six YS-11 Kokutei ordered twenty Bombardier Dash-8-Q400 for delivery between 2002 and 2007, the last turboprops to be ordered by the airline to date. Two more were ordered and delivered in 2010-2011. The larger Q400s can carry 74 passengers in a single class. After the acquisition of Kita no Kokukaisha and its rebranding into Koutei Connection to cover regional service, it was decided to move the turboprops to the new subsidiary. Transfer started in early 2017, by now, 7 airframes had been moved, with the other fifteen expected to wollow by 2019. The !400s are beign replaced by SCI-Toscaire-300s.

Boeing 787:

Koutei Koku was one of the earliest customers of Boeing's Dreamliner, ordering 30 787-3 for domestic service and 10 787-8 for international service in 2005 (plus options for another 40). However, following delays in the program, the airline converted its 787-3 orders into 20 787-8 and 10 787-9 in 2010. The first airframe was delivered in December 2011, with the backlog emptied by early 2016. Those 30 787-8s ended up replacing the A300-600 fleet in domestic routes, thus the dreamliners were fitted with 325 seats in three classes (15 Business, 26 Premium Economy, 284 Economy).

The initial backlog of 10 787-9 was increased to 48 in 2012 when Koutei converted all but two of its options for 787s into firm orders. Deliveries started in 2014 and currently 18 airframes are in service with 30 orders still unfilled. Of the 18 planes, Koutei uses ten on the domestic market and eight on international routes. The former can seat 369 passengers in three classes (22 business, 26 Premium Economy, 321 Economy), while the latter is fitted for 224 in four (6 First, 44 Business, 23 Premium Economy, 151 Economy).

In addition to the -8 and -9 variants, Koutei converted its last two options in 2015 dding an extra firm order for the larger 787-10, another 7 were ordered in January 2017 bringing the total to 10. The 787-10 is planned to enter service in 2018/19 and replace the 777-300 on the domestic market.

Boeing 747-8:

The most represented aircraft type in service with Koutei koku is the Boeing 747. During its long years of service -now 47 since its introduction- the airline owned 126 airframes (another 7 are currently on order), with 83 of them being in service at the same time in 1994-95. Of them, 23 are of the -8 series.

To bolster cargo capacity Koutei Koku rodered eight of the new Boeing 748-8F in 2008. The latest, stretched freighter version of the 747 allows to an increase in payload to 134.000kg (over the 112.000 of the -400F) while retaining a comparable range of 8.130km (compared to the 8.230km of the -400ERF). Deliveries were fulfilled between 2012 and 2015. The 747-8F introduced a variant of Koutei's current livery, featured only on cargo planes, it removes the blue underbelly, leaving only the tail and aft section not beign painted white. Kotei retains further eight options for the freighter versions, but it is currently unclear if they will be turned into firm orders when the older 747-400Fs will reach their retirement age.

With the 747-400s approaching retirement age, Koutei also looked for a replacement of its long-haul flagship aircrafts. Possible choiches were, necessariliy, the Airbus A380 or the Boeing 747-8i. Given the airline adoption of the Freighter model a few years earlier, and it's long history as an operator of the type (only British Airways/BOAC, Lufthansa, United Airlines and PanAm operated, and still operates, the 747 for more time than Koutei) the airline chose Boeing's -8Intercontinentals over Airbus double-decker behemoth. An order for fifteen, plus 3 options, was signed in 2010, with deliveries starting in 2013. The aircrafts are fitted with a four-class layout and can carry 358 passengers (12 first, 78 Business, 32 Premium Economy, 236 Economy). currently, fifteen are ins ervice, plus three more on order, after Koutei Konverted its options in 2016. Other than that, in early 2017, Koutei signed a deal with Boeing take over the two unsold airframes and two unfilled orders intended for the bankrupt Russian airline Transaero.

SCI IT-D Toscaire:

The Thiarian-built Toscaire-300 is the latest addition (at least considering all new models) to Koutei Koku fleet. With the acquisition of kita no kokukaisha in 2015 to cover the regional connection the airline decided to shift all of its turboprops to the new subsidiary. In order to maintain capacity on mainline feeder connections that warranted more than a turboprop but still less than a A319 various smaller jetliners were considered for aquisition. Koko's Flag carrier eventually stuck a deal with Thiarian SCI for their Toscaire-300 -surprising most aviation enthusiast who thought Koutei Koku would have placed an order for the Bombardier CS-100 or the Embraer E-190-E2- in early 2016. 30 Toscaire-300s were ordered, with options for another 30. Delivieries started in the second quarter of 2017 and 11 airframes are currently in service, fitted with 98 seats in two classes (8 Premium Economy, 90 economy). Deliveries are expected to last until 2019, unless options are converted ito firm orders.
