The track record for multi-passenger deck aircraft going from plans to production has been extremely poor. I suspect it has a lot to do with the complicated construction - the 747 did it by placing a small little compartment on top of a pressure vessel, and the A380 has the benefit of 21st century technology. Oddly enough the L-1011 was a multi-deck jet too by converting what would be cargo pallet space into a (windowless) lounge area, but it was a rare option unique to PanAm and maybe one or two other operators. Oddly enough there have been more pressurized piston-engine multi-deck aircraft designs constructed than actual jets - the Boeing 377, the Breuget Whatever The Heck it is, probably a few others.

Though in the case of the Super VC-10 (what else) it was mostly extreme political apathy. I don't know what it is with you Brits but it's like your government hates airplanes industry and self-pride.

Addition to the VC.10's, that could be made only thanks to Hood's great help.

Majority of the VC.10's for the BUA were configured in combined passenger/freight arrangement with a cargo door on the left side of the fuselage. Vickers tried to exploit the potential of the VC.10 for the cargo operations by creating several specialized projects for that purpose. F-3 was an all-cargo upgrade of BUA design with a large side-loading door and capacity to carry 80.000 pounds (36320 kilograms) of payload. This was followed by more ambitious F-4, which had swinging nose (similar in their concept to the later Guppy freighters used to transport Airbus fuselages) and payload capacity similar to that of F-3, cargo hold of 83 feet of useful length (25,3 m) and effective range of 3600 miles.

Another, but much less known project of freighter VC.10 was the one that contained a clamshell nose door and Jumbo-like upper deck with hump, clearly reminiscent of the ATL Carvair aircraft (itself conversions of DC-4) that were used at the time as air ferries over the La Manche Channel. Exact details seem sketchy, though, as it was purely Vickers' internal study that never progressed beyond the stage of concept model.

All the praise for this drawing need to go to Hood who made all the hard work with the necessary changes.

The hump-back freighter design has been attributed in the Putnam book 'Vickers Aircraft Since 1908' as a military transport that might date to 1965. As Eswube says, there are model photos of a strikingly similar civilian version. We can't be sure both are exactly the same design but it seems likely. No official Vickers type numbers are known for these and they may indeed be internal studies only and some kind of private-venture intended to catch the eye of the RAF and the channel operators. I don't think there is an actual RAF requirement that would fit the type during the mid-1960s period which strengthens the private-venture case.

I meaned a combi variant of BUA VC-10 F.3 described above with side door simillar with the B707-351C and 80.000lb load capacity.
