Swiss D-38 series

The Morane-Saulnier MS.40 series was planned to be France's principal fighter in a future European war, however the rapid fall of France scuppered the aircraft's French service. Instead Swiss licence production allowed the design to be developed and flown into the mid-1950's.

To form an indigenous production line, construction rights to the MS.406 were provided to EKW in Switzerland, and 2 pattern aircraft of a hybrid MS.406H (for Helvetica) were provided to Switzerland in 1938. The aircraft were rapidly modified to a Swiss standard with Swiss radios and weapons, and entered production as the D-3800. The first batch of aircraft entered Swiss service in September 1939 as Europe descended into war.
After a production run of 82 aircraft, a revised model D-3801 entered production at DoFlug starting in late 1940. The new model was designed in conjunction with Morane-Saulnier as licence production of another MS variant, the MS.412 with another 106 aircraft being built.
Further development continued with assistance from Morane-Saulnier now in occupied France, with a more advance D-3802 first flying in 1944. This model may be the MS.450, but from this range in time details are unclear as to whether it may instead have been a different model or a Franco-Swiss hybrid. As the European war was now winding down there was little need for the new fighter, and production only amounted to 12 aircraft, with most being the D-3802A version with modified canopy.
The final variant was a single D-3803 which lost out to the war-surplus Mustangs to provide the fighters to the post-war Swiss airforce.
By 1959 all D-38 series aircraft had been retired.

Dornier Do 24 in German service

Originally designed for the Dutch, the Do 24 became the German staple rescue and transport flying boat of WWII

[ img ]

Two prototypes were built for Germany with Jumo 205C engines, but these were underpowered and the aircraft was overlooked in favour of the BV 138 "flying clog", even though that machine had a hard battle to become a viable aircraft. With the German invasion of Norway however, both sidelined prototypes were used operationally as germany conscripted alll available resources to the war effort.
With the capture of the Netherlands the Aviolanda factory that was producing the Do 24's was cpatured intact, along with many partially completed airframes. This was a great boon for Germany, and the uncompleted aircraft were completed with their Wright R-1820 engines, and modified for rescue recovery as the Do 24 N model, and used by the German paramilitary Seenotdienst rescue service.
Initially unarmed, civil registered, and painted in Red Cross white the aircraft were used to rescue downed airmen, but the British soon refused to accept that the Seenotdienst was a civilian service and started shooting down the aircraft. The whole of the Seenotdienst was quickly reorganised onto a military footing, and the aircraft were camouflaged and armed for their own protection.
As the supply of captured American engines was exhausted, the Bramo 323 engine was instead fitted to the aircraft, as the Do 24 T.
The Dornier Do 24's continued in German service in all theatres until the end of the war, both in rescue and agent insertion missions. Later production aircraft were built in French factories.

Dornier Do 24 in Spanish Service

In 1944 12 Do 24 T-3 aircraft were transfered to Spain, as Germany was no longer in a position to operate SAR aircraft in the Mediterranean.

[ img ]

The Dorniers were based in Majorca and operated into the 1970's as SAR aircraft.
An aircraft is preserved at the Muséo del Aire in Madrid, and another was returned to Dornier and is still flying, having been converted into the Do 24 ATT amphibian turbine test bed.
