Vickers 266 Vincent

The Vickers 266 Vincent was the general purpose version of the Vildebeest Mk.II torpedo bomber.



Starting in 1934, poduction of new build aircraft, and conversion of Vildebeests, led to a total of 197 Vincents being created. The aircraft was a minimal change to the Vildebeest, with the addition of a ground-air message hook, which was progressively removed in the field as radio communications became more ubiquitous, and the addition of a long-range fuel tank at the former torpedo hard point being the major changes. The Vincents were posted to squadrons in East Africa, the Middle East and India, and although outdated by 1939 many were still in service when Italy entered the War. Units in East Africa were committed to actions against the Italians through to the liberation of Abyssinia, while the aircraft in Iraq were used during the Anglo-Iraqi War. By early 1943 the aging Vincents were retired from front-line service.

One of the most interesting facts of the Bucket is as an learning tool. Prior to an unified scale, I thought that the Vickers Vincent/Vildebeest was a small biplane (In fact, I thought that all the biplanes were small !) but thanks to Sheepster´s nice drawing, I have now a real idea of its size. Thanks!

A couple of american interwar models, and a german one. Fairchild Model 24 was a sucsessful touring airplane built in two major production models, W with Warner Scarab or Super Scarab radials, and R with inline Ranger 6 cylinder engine. Both models were widely used during WWII as utility and liaison plane. Fairchild KR-34 a was light biplane equiped with the smallest (5 cylinder only) of the Curtiss Whirlwind radial aeroengines family, and was used as a sporting, training and utility aircraft; the yellow one depicted here is an airplane used by the Ontrario Provincial Air Service as survey plane in the wide open spaces of Canada, and is currently shown in a permanent static exposition . Finally, the german Henschel He-122 was an airplane that fail to reach the production phase, but served as baseline for the well known and of similar function Hs 126; shown here with german civilian markings of the prewar era.

Vickers Vildebeest and Vincent in NZ service

New Zealand was the only export customer for both the Vildebeest and Vincent.



New Zealand received its first Vildebeest Mk.III aircraft as the type 277 in 1935, while several earlier production type 267 Mk.III's were resold to NZ in 1940. Additionally type 286 Mk.IV's were delivered in 1937. As torpedo bombers the Vildebeests were used intiially for maritime patrol, but as they became less relevent as front line combat aircraft they found themselves relegated to training roles.



While were built specifically for NZ, all the Vincents were delivered second-hand fom the RAF. They joined their Vildebeest siblings in patrol and later training service, being finally retired in 1944. Two Vincents are currently undergoing restoration in NZ.
