Hello, Shipbucketeers. I am Rafa, from Caracas, Venezuela. I have long been a follower of SB drawings on the internet, and decided to register in order to learn about ships and -eventually- try my hamfisted hands at drawing. I'm 48 and semi-retired, a former IT systems designer.

My hobby is modeling static aircraft, and for that I am an avid scratchbuilder. I would like to make my own scratchbuilt ships, but knowing next to nothing about anything waterborne, except riding peñeros (pinasse-like fishing boats) for trawling and fun, if the Captains allow me on board; I'm at a loss when it comes to ships.

My first question is, Is there a way to determine a ship's hull form (cross section) from a SB profile?

Thanks beforehand for your answers, and I will be roaming the site enjoying the sights.

Gracias,

Rafa

Hello and welcome to the Shipbucket! :)
Have a nice time here.
As for Your "first question", I'm afraid, that rather there is no way to do it, or at least it is very un-obvious. :(
There are model plans, also in the internet, that show cross sections of ships hulls (but I'm sure Your'e already aware of it ;) ), but for the purpose of the 2-dimensional SB-drawings this is largely unnecessary, I'm afraid.

Unfortunately no, unless that information is provided in the drawing in some way (shading or, most helpfully, a side profile). If you're doing a real ship you're going to have to consult photos. If you're doing an AU ship, I'd suggest consulting the original drawer.

A good resource for plastic modeling, actually, would be Aircraft Resource Center (www.aircraftresourcecenter.com). Despite its name they do a lot of ships too, and given your background I think you'd fit in. I'm registered there as Just Call me Ray, incidentally :)
