wait what! paint! why so difficult!
you can create stuff like that easier and better looking (and better working) in free programs like sketchup or blender.

Well, obviously not for the sake of creating 3D models, 'cause technically it's not a 3D model, it's just an isometric image of an object. Drawing in this style is a common trend in pixel-art. So the answer would be: for an artistic challenge.

I'm a 3D designer by profession, so i recomand using 3D Studio Max, Rhino 3D, Maya stuff like that for the best quality.
