The Ehrenstral class was followed by the Forstena type. They shared a common hull but had diffrent arnament. The Forstena or F-type had more emphasis on surface warfare and had a powerfull gunarnament consisting of 2x3 120mm m/42 semiautomatic guns.The airdefence consisted of 7x2 40mm m/36 guns. For ASW the ship got active sonar and 2x3 305mm Squid asw grenades.

The ships where modernized with new sensors and AAA artillery during the 1950s and finally the torpedoes where replace by RBS 08F SSM in 1964-66.

The ships where often deployed as surface action groups around the world - especially when the cruisers where falling to age and money. They where withdrawn from service when the Mannerheim and Lewenhaupt entered service between 1976-80.

This is the Gathenhielm class destoryers. Designed between 1946 and 1948 to replace all the old prewar destroyers. As many as possible of the war lessons where incorporated in the desgned.

The where slightly enlarged over the preceeding Forstena class. They where also armed with the brand new full automatic 12cm L50 Bofors M50 gun and the new 49/48 L70 automatic antiaircraft gun. The torpedo arnment was reduce in favour of preparation for the design of SSMs. The 375mm ASW rocket replace the squid used on the older destroyer clases.

WIP

Greatful for some comments on the ship concept and the drawing.

The top drawing is as completed 1952. The bottom drawing is after MLU 1964.

I'm not certain about the two ASW mortars and the radar placement seems rather low.
The Air search radar in particular seems perfectly placed to irradiate the bridge.
Also, what is that thing on the stern?

Yes, but look at the IRL Halland - she carried the AURAK that way on the bow and had the LW-02/ PS-47 in a similar position.

It is a "lysraketautomat" an automatic illumination rocket launcher, very common in the 50s on RSwN ships. I think it also can be used for chaff and flare rockets aswell

I was gonna ask if this is a improved and "Up gunned" version of the Halland class DD in having a 3rd 120mm instead of the single 57mm which the Hallands had fitted as B mounts

Well...I've tried to make the ultimate gunnery destroyer with all the war experience in hand, I used the Halland and especially the Columbian version as a start. I think I have to reduce the AURAK to one and look over the SSM installation. She slightly larger - 5m longer in WL, a meter wider.

The next or improved version of this will be the Horn - bascially a Halland with two 57mm twins in B and X position.

The Columbians differed from Halland in having 3x120mm, 4x40mm and only 5 TTs, 1 AURAK and no SSM rail. I have also looked at the never built Lappland (2x2 120mm, 7x40/48, no 57mm)

But I think the Daring class is the closest equilant, even thoug I use mostly swedish weaponsystem.
