Just by looking at it. I've had years of "experience," so to speak, and judging by how many driving wheels it has (tractive effort), and boiler size (weight), I can estimate how many cars it can pull.

Yesterday I had a discussion with an expert: such locotender could pull 400-500 tons.
A more standard steam loco (I mean Italian pre-ww2) could pull from 700 till 1000 tons. The German 52 (normally known as kriegslok) should exceed 1200 tons.
Coming back to midgets each one has a weigth of 36 tons plus the wagon (let's say 4-6 tons); six of them means less than 250 tons...
A very interesting exercize!
