I'm not sure your main battery turrets can actually rotate; since the back of the turret is squared to some degree, rotating it will jam against the barbettes and deckhouses.

Even if this were not so, six inches is small enough that the turrets might jam in action from the ship being damaged and deforming. And training the turrets outboard just so you can slap a coat of paint on the back is kind of a pain in the ass...

Hi Erik,

See, that's the problem with designing stupid guns yourself ;)

You may well be right - here's the scratch drawing (at least, I think it's this one) I did when coming up with the thing, I'd figured it would fit - just - but your point about the clearance being extremely tight is a good one. Rats.

Edit: Found the other details, better explanation below!

First version, with enormous barbette due to poor internal arrangements:

Second, improved version, internals re-arranged to reduce barbette size

I've got some ideas knocking around for a third version that would appear on the next class that would fit with the AU (it's still not fixed down, as I keep finding stuff I get wrong and therefore needs to be redone) - but the idea is that these guns were of the same type as those fitted to the fortresses on the Schleswig and Aussig islands to the north-east and south-west of the main Pepys island group, as such, the 150mm Drachen turret was eventually found to be too heavy and unwieldy for shipboard use, and the next Drachenodem class used a 128mm calibre (which, to be honest, goes better with a 203mm main battery anyway) with still better internal arrangement - barrel assembly would be changed to pivot at the top of the assembly rather than through the middle, firing barrel changes to the top barrel to keep forces in line with pivot, shorter barrels because of reduced caliber and just plain shorter anyway, resulting in a smaller-diameter barbette and now the range suits the Wasserfall better too - the 150mm has a maximum range quite close to the Wasserfall so they interfere with rather than complement each other - unless you were aiming to pelt your missile with shrapnel as it lines up on the target, anyway!

Regards,
Adam

Why do I only ever spot typos after I hit the submit button?

Well at least you put thought into it, obviously.

Hi Klagldsf,

Thanks - I've always been of the opinion that if I can't be bothered to waste my time at least trying to do this well it's extremely unfair of me to expect you all to do my thinking for me! Speaking of which, after putting some thought into it, I can come up with three options:
1) Ignore it, and pretend it goes away. This is my next-to-least favourite option
2) re-draw the thing in it's entirety. To be honest, given the fact that by now I don't actually like this ship any more, that's my least-favourite option
3) sneakily stretch the hull by 20 px, adding 5 px behind each drachen turret. On the face of it, seems plausible, but still feels like a hacky fix, and I'd be forever feeling I should have added a jacuzzi and a bar on the quarterdeck and possibly one of those things that makes the front jump in the air...

So, I guess what I'm asking is "Is option 3 actually feasible?"

I must admit, although the design of the ship is not exactly feasible ... the quality of the drawing work is one of the better qualities I have seen done by fools in this section. ;)

I'd make 6 pixels behind the turrets, you will see why when you'll draw back the railings ;)

Hi Heuhen,

Thank you, I think! I've tried quite hard to learn best practice from the artists here - I am in no sense a natural at this - fortunately, there are many, many good artists here to take lessons from! I must confess, I'm really impressed with the likes of maomatic and David Latuch and KimWolf - now that is real talent, to just turn up and plonk down a drawing of that quality!

Any thoughts on the proposed cut-and-shut to improve the turret spacing?

Oh, and BB, already spotted that after a little thought, but thank you for the shout.

On the subject of the railings, how do you think they look ... I tried something non MSPaint for the main railings, would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Regards,
Ad

Well, you've still got a problem with noodly masts. A mast, especially one carrying big and heavy rotating electronics, shouldn't just end anywhichwhere and neither should its supports.

Hi Thiel,

Just to clarify, the thickness of the mast structure is incorrect, or the shape of the mast structure is incorrect (or both)? For both masts?
