Since fuel is such a problem for the ship I'm thinking of making the ship nuclear.

Yes, I bet you are. It would be cheaper and easier by an order of magnitude to remove the bell, scrap the ship, build a new one underneath, and lower the bell back on.

Not really, think of the an power, time and cost, Japan didn't really have any of those by the time their nuclear program was even relatively working. Frankly I think the effort would have been easier just to build another Unryo Carrier or convert Yamato or Musashi along the lines of Shinano

FFS, the USN had eight different dino-fueled carriers of classes almost identical to those which later shipped nuclear weapons, with no real deck armor to cut through, with the reactors already designed, and never in a hundred million fucking years did anyone even semi-seriously suggest converting them to nuclear power.

It's fair to say that you can't just add nuclear power to the Yamato. Because, reasons.

I would suggest just doing an Iowa-style refit and being done with it.

One thing I'd suggest for your refit is to take another look at the bridge structure - IJN bridge structures evolved to the point that they did in an attempt to provide good spotting positions for optical equipment - by anything even approaching current date you'll find that taken care of by LLTV (low-light TV) \ IR \ EO systems - with most of the air spotting taken care of by radars, which the '40s superstructure isn't shaped to allow optimum placement for.

Were I doing the refit, I'd look at cutting back and replacing a lot of the stuff from the conning tower up (and that's just because I'm lazy and wouldn't bother to cut the armour back).
