Of course these guys are right about the implausibility of this refit, but as a lover of big things that go fast I applaud your effort so far.

Something for you to consider: the King George V's 14" gun barrels were designed to be able to replace the 13.5" guns of the same BBs your BC is replacing. I can't recall if that was because they wanted to test them, or if they were actually planning on refitting Iron Duke and Centurion with them as part of a modernization program but that would at least alleviate the problem of finding ammo. The ammunition hoists wouldn't even have been modified, apparently there was already a half inch of wiggle room.

I am intrigued with the turret placement on this ship, specifically that plus the sparten aft half make me wonder how this ship was not very heavy forward. I get that the machinery spaces are oriented more aft but given the stack placement it stoll looks like the bulk of the machinery weight would be amidships.

Obviously it worked in real life, I just find it interesting.

Tiger was kept as a front line ship into the 1930's and if she had of been selected for continued service she would have been refitted similar to Renown (which is a refit I wouldn't mind seeing you draw).

I think if you are intent on the idea of a second class BC with a relatively simple refit you should stick with what you have been working on.

Also the Kongos got a little bit of extra speed because they rebuilt the stern to be longer, thus creating a better length to beam ration. Without that (it would probably have been to expensive for the RN to consider but hey its your drawing) your ship minus a turret would probably have a similar speed to them rather than a few extra knots.

Power required goes as roughly the cube of the speed. Going from 22 to 25 knots, say, is fantastically easier than going from 30 to 33 knots, even though it's only a three-knot change in both cases.

I don't know the exact internal arrangement of Lion, but you're not going to add more than two compartments of extra machinery.

Let's say you go from eight to ten compartments (10-19, rather than 10-13, 16-19), and let's say your new machinery is 25% more powerful per unit volume. By our naive rule of thumb, this 50% increase in power should get us a 50% improvement in the cube of the speed ratio. That would take you from 28 knots to about 32.

Of course, there are limits to how much power you can pour in, and you're not optimized for those speeds or powers. I think you'd be very, very lucky to achieve meaningfully more than 32 knots. 34 knots is plainly not happening IMHO; Alaska required 150,000 shaft horsepower to reach 33 knots on similar displacement (vs. 70,000shp originally available to Lion).

Jabba and Colombamike, I'm going to start work on a 24 tiger (if anybody knows of any other info about it please share anything would be appreciated as I don't have any books to work from) and may do a 30's one as well later.

erik_t, I agree (but 32 would still be very scary for any pocket battleship or raiding cruisers far from home (and fuel)), but since the RN was limited to max 2 training and gunnery ship (HMS Iron Duke (1912) and HMS Centurion (1911) I think in real life) I think keeping Tiger makes more sense so will work on her.
