Have a look at what the Chinese have done to the former Russian aircraft carrier Varyag, now called Liaoning.

I know there is much less superstructure to modernise than on a cruiser but I think the Ukrayina would keep her superstructure for the most part and have everything else fitted around it.

They are launched from a variant of the tubes you used on our Halifax class frigates, and vertically from the VLS on our Iroquois class destroyers. Thats what I am using on my design.

The best advice I can give you is to plan your armament around the role(s) you want the ship to perform. For example, the design I am working on is focused on is amphibious assault support (shore bombardment with guns and tomahawk missiles) and area air defense.

(hope this is ok and not thread/ship high jacking)
I was interested in this thread but after thinking about the Slava class cruiser Ukrayina, I doubt she would go to Canada (ok I doubt she will go anywhere but a scrap yard ... ).
But what if Ukraine wanted to stop Russia having her what better than give her to a NATO member and after a bit of thinking who better than Poland (not that Poland would really want her but politics might not let them get rid of her.
So here is my WIP of a polish rebuild (using mostly us parts), and thinking about cutting cost with less missiles.

(role would be as a flagship / colonial cruiser so Poland can contribute something to long distance Nato/US ).

(feel free to tell me to stop thread/ship high jacking if you don't want more design proposals)(don't think it would ever be built due to age/spare parts/maintenance, etc).

@battleship lover

What type of escort role do you want it to perform? The choices I can think of are anti-submarine helicopter cruiser, area air defense cruiser for battle groups and carrier groups, and trade protection. Each has its own combination of guns, missiles, and aircraft.

For example, a anti-submarine helicopter cruiser should be able to launch at minimum two helicopters simultaneously from a heli-deck that takes up at minimum half the ships length. Missiles should also be anti-submarine with some anti air and anti ship mixed in to provide self defense. Guns should be kept to a minimum, with a 5" forward with two 3"/76mm guns aft on the beam if there's space.

Area air defense cruisers at minimum should have three long range missile launchers on the center line, with mid-range missiles in VLS packs on the center line fore and aft or on the beam. Guns should be placed amidships on the beam or center line as to not interfere with the main missile armament and limited to one or two depending on caliber. A helicopter landing area should be included in the stern area, with the landing pad doubling as a lift to a below decks hanger to save room.

A general escort configuration should have a heli-deck for two aircraft aft, a heavy gun system forward in "A" position, a long range missile system in "B" position, with an anti-submarine system aft the heli-deck. A selection of mid-range anti-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, and land attack missiles should be distributed in VLS systems around the ship.

Hope this helped,

Bismark195

Redone to reduce cost !
I tried to use systems used by the Oliver Hazard Perry class as Poland already has 2 and the US is getting rid of them so should be very cheap (and lets face it this hull isn't worth much new kit).

The result is lightly armed (for its size) but should be good as a flagship/distant waters cruiser with lots of accommodation/store/big hangar for helicopters (maybe 2 decks down into the old missile store ?)
To do,
- helicopters (4 small ? what do Poland use)
- fir more boats
- ASW torps / Ras gear
- ?

Poland is using only on helicopter per class. Poland military funding in the Navy isn't big enough for supporting more, they are focusing more on land unit in self defense.
