I would like to ask my fellow Kaiserliche Marine enthusiasts if they have read the book in the subject title and what their opinions are of the book. If there are any useful photos or diagrams, how detailed is the information. Although I am not a German speaker I am willing muddle through the text to get any useful information. |

Hi Tempest! If you mean Erich Groener's 1960s vintage 8-volume book, I have the first two volumes (those about surface warships). They are out of print for some time now and rather expensive to order online. As for the text, it's mostly numbers and abbreviations, which might be or might not be explained. Hard to read even for a German. It contains no photographs at all. The drawings are on the small side, but reasonably detailed (quality differs; those of WWII era ships are better than the earlier ones). But if you're really into the nuts and bolts, they are just too small. On the plus side, there are a huge load of drawings which are literally not available anywhere else at all; I was particularly impressed by the section about German WWII-era destroyers, which contains numerous drawings of nearly each individual ship during various stages of their careers, and also drawings of uncompleted projects. Generally, the focus is on the WWII-era; I have the nasty suspicion that the authors feel most at home there in every respect. If one is more into the WWI-era, it's still quite a resource (especially concerning smaller ships), but not as valuable as for the Nazi era. I hope that helps. Greetings GD |

you guys are not going to start sharing pdf. file books here, are you? since thats basicly piratism. Anyways, like said, those books really good "basic" library for any warship enthustiastic, so i recomendate getting them (legal ways naturally  ) if possible.

Those are some of the more obscure carrier designs (and among my favourites) from my worklist. Page one has two design variants for a "Kleiner Seeflugzeugträger als HSK und U-Boot-Begleiter" (Small Seaplane carrier for commerce raiding and submarine escort). Page two has a "Flugbootträger für Fernaufklärer" (Long-range recon seaplane carrier) at the top and a "Seeflugzeugträger" (Seaplane carrier) at the bottom.The first ship on the second page looks like the catapultship "Falke" or "Bussard"; but the others are sure only projects or ? https://www.dropbox.com/s/6kj08o7j61ro1 ... 1.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/ydal52f7c6dze ... 2.jpg?dl=0 Regarding Gröner's books: Working with them is... mixed, at least in my opinion. They have side-line drawings for a lot of ships, especially obsure ones, but I found out that not all of them might be correct in all details (when comparing them to actual photographs). Information wise, it is a lot of text and tables because the books cover so many ships, it is often in abbreviations, smybols or code. Each book explains how the information is presented at the beginning, but I still have to read it up every time. I found that actual information on ships, especially more well known ones, can be found elsewhere in an easier format and in english as well. |
