Recently I have stumbled upon a page of US WWII Naval Intelligence detailing Japanese whaling vessels converted into minesweepers and patrol boats, wherein they are referred to as "Whale Killers".
Quote:
Almost all whale killers that can be spared from essential fishing have been converted to XPC's and XAM's. As such they have proven extremely valuable ships due to their great endurance, seaworthyness, speed and towing power are equal or better than most naval vessels of comparable size.
...
This ship seems to be equipped for AA Escort, miesweeping, and anti submarine duties. For this purpose, the deckhouse accomidations have been increased to house a crew of 30-40 offecers and men, foremast moved abaft the bridge, and gun positions, depth charge racks, and miesweeping gear added.
Does anyone have any information or pictures that show the size and/or details on these perticualr vessels?

In Norway we used those 150 cars ferries and also some of 400? large ferries as mine-layers during the Cold war.

Here is an "artsy" sky and water version I did for fun of the 106 year old cement hauling freighter St. Marys Challenger sailing.

Also you might want to check out this link: http://ww6.enjoy.ne.jp/~iwashige/whalecatchers.htm
It seems like all the wartime whalers are listed there with their names and some other info.
