Post subject: | Question about several German WW2 warship designs |
I recently came about several German warship designs and was wondering if anyone here has additional info about them: 1) Seaplane tender designs. I found these designs on the Internet in what appear to be scans from books. Since I couldn't find any resembling pictures in my books and I don't know any Russian, it would be appreciated if someone could provide a translation. http://www.wunderwaffe.narod.ru/WeaponB ... raw/17.jpg http://www.wunderwaffe.narod.ru/WeaponB ... raw/18.jpg 2) Minesweeper mothership The second one is of a minesweeper mothership that was designed in 1938. The only picture and information I have is from Gröner and lacks any details. I was wondering if there was any additional information available, since I want to draw that ship. Thanks in advance. |

As for the first question, my knowledge of Russian is far from perfect, and translating something from one foreign language into another foreign language is never easy, but that's something like that: (1) Projects of German floating seaplane bases Porject of floating base of long-range recce flying boats (upper drawing) was designed under infulence of classical aircraft carrier and inherits from it certain features of flying deck. Her stern part was used to taje seaplanes to the side, their post-landing servicing and lowering with a lift into hangar. With that lift planes were transported from hangar to upper deck but preparing them for flight, as well as arming them (in external armament) took place in bow part of the ship, in the area of ("nepodvizhnoi") catapult. There were lifts for transporting bombs and, in case of necessity, of engines and refuelling equipment. Project of base of Ar-196 seaplanes had also unusual features. Base of mast ("nadstroika" - lit. superstructure) and smokestack were in the centre of ship's width, but on the left side there was special transporter for airplanes from stern to bow and other way round. In front of mast (?) were located two ("nepodvizhoi") catapults and hangar opening, from which planes were lifted with a crane. Then planes were filled with fuel and prepared for flight. In stern part on ("yote") there was located pad where planes were undergoing control and repairs. From there planes, through upper way could be transported to bow part for take-off or through special doors into hangar. Lifting of seaplanes from water was conducted by two cranes on left side. (2) Projects of german floating bases of seaplanes-("konvoirov" - couriers? convoyers?) Variant I (upper) and Variant II different from each other in arrangement, dimensions and main propulsion system - in first case - three-screw, in second - two-screw. Basic idea of the project in multiple repeating of the concept of base of seaplanes Ar-196. (?) |
