AMERICAN AQUARIUS was originally one of eight "Lancer-class" container ships. Beginning AMERICAN LANCER, built in 1968, they were the first class of purpose-built cellular container ships ever constructed. The hulls of these ships had relatively fine lines in comparison with later container ships. That gave them a good turn of speed (over 22 knots), but reduced the cargo capacity. Nevertheless, the "Lancers" were very successful ships. all of them lasted well beyond 2000 and, I believe, at least two of them are still in service today.

AMERICAN AQUARIUS was one of five "Lancers" sold to Navieras de Puerto Rico in 1988, after U.S. Lines went out of business. Renamed CAROLINA (the name was pronounced "Caro-LEE-na", in the Spanish fashion, because NPR was a Puerto Rican company), the ship operated between Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland, with an additional stop in the Dominican Republic. She was finally retired, and scrapped, in 2002.

Subsequent History:
88 CAROLINA - 02 CAROL

Disposal Data:
BU Alang 17.10.02

This is the original ship's cargo plan for SS Carolina from when I was Mate on her in 1995. At that time she was on a regular run between New York, Jacksonville, San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Rio Haina (Dominican Republic).
