Pre-1906/07 ca. mostly black or charcoal-grey hulls; superstructure oftenmost in same color or off-white (depending, I guess on paint availability and Captain's personal taste. Afterwards it seems to mostly have been a darker hue of grey. It seems clear, though, that whatever original color was used on foreign purchases, such as the German Haireddin Barbarossas, this was retained. In short, the Osmanlis didn't seem to either have had the interest or inclination or, for that matter, the financial resources to care too much about obtaining a truly heterogenous paint scheme. Mind you, the sources are quite woefully vague on this aspect, nor does b/w photos really help that much - and, lastly, colored images and postcard prints of Osmanli warships from this period seem to be extremely rare! |
