I'm not too sure - hence why I bought the Chappell book. ;) My usual method is to draw the high points of a ship's career, especially if it changed appearances. I need to wait on the book to arrive to decide that though. As for scans I'm not too worried about that as I already have some decent line drawings to use for dimensions.

Each ship that survived long enough essentially had 4 looks, a slightly archaic quasi war as built look which didn't have enough sails, had all long guns, and had regular open railings, the definitive barbary war and war of 1812 look over gunned with mixed carronades and long guns, plenty of topsails, and planked in railings and head, the post war look which mostly just involved changing to an all 32lb battery, and the receiving ship look which involved removal of the topmasts and guns and addition of windows and a large barn like shed over the main deck.

For now, starting work on the Constitution's 1812 look (the definitive one). We'll see how my skills translate to sailing vessels. I'm not too confident this will turn out well in all honesty!
