Post subject:  Cargo ship WIP and training to become better

Well I am trying to get better on drawing so I decided to create a cargo ship to practice on how to give my drawings better depth
Its a WIP but I am looking for some good reference pics of similar ships since I have not been able to find that many of the certain type that I am drawing.

Colors, colors, colors...
Window, hull black and superstructure black are wrong.

Cant the hull and the superstructure have the same colors? :?

Ok, I'll try to explain this but don't follow my advise until some of the gurus confirms it ;)
As far as I understand, in ShipBucket it is a common rule to make hulls little darker than superstructures. So, generally speaking, even if they are the same color, you should draw it in slightly different shades.

I have made some changes to it now and also drawn some more
I followed whyme:s thoughts about coloring because I remember reading the same thing long time ago
The windows also have the right color now I hope :)

I see nobody has really helped you in your first attempt.

Your model is an 1950's style cargo ship. In those days the bridge and officers accommodation was placed midhsips with the idea that the bridge had to be placed foward for visibility. The problem was that the best cargo loading area in terms of cubic feet was midhsips! That is why most ships today have the accommodation and bridge placed aft.

Ok, the crew would be about 25 in those days so you have WAY too many lifeboats, AND , to much accommodation space. One lifeboat in the fore area and one aft is fine, port and starboard, plus a few life rafts. Usually there is no crew accommodation below so forget about any portholes in the hull itself. Also what is the strange 'hanging' deck (for want of a better description) under the hatches. Except for small coastal tankers this never was a design item.

Most importantly this ship would be a bad performer for the owner simply because it does not have enough cargo handling gear and hold/hatches. This type of old design would have a 'forest' of cargo handling gear, usually twin derricks that can be used in 'union purchase' (2 x 5 ton = 1 x 7.5 ton in UP).

Take a peak at a brilliant model of the ship you are trying to create at http://www.dvomarinedesign.com and look for pics of his OCEAN CONVEYOR.
Dom has created a sailable version of his cargo ship in the software version of Virtual Sailor and Vehicle Simulator, both a very affordable ship simulator programs created by Illan that you should check out if you are a shipping enthusiast. Check out the cargo handling gear on Ocean Conveyor it is very typical of the ships of that generation. Lots of hatches/holds and cargo gear.

I posted my first drawing as the 'Jahre Viking', the largest ship built. I have a sailable version in 'Virtual Sailor' created by Samu which I am happy to share now she is scrapped.

Keep up the good work and don't be discouraged by the 'experts' on site, they mean well.
