The Hawai'ian Royal Steamship Company is in need of some ocean-going car ferries. The ships must meet the following specifications:
The ports used are as follows:
Fare structure for short and long haul routes Recommendations of the Joint Commission on Maritime Safety The important part of this last link is that each side of the ship must have enough lifeboats for 75% of the passengers and crew, or the ship must be capable of launching lifeboats from both sides while under a severe list. Minor additional data: Christmas however represents a problem. Because of the Whale calving season having started, combined with an added holiday demand, the Rail ferries are re-purposed into transporting trucks and additional cars. This allows for additional passenger/car service at the expense of rail service. The gap in capacity is made up for with the annual arrival and charter of a Californian Carrougha CONRAIL ship on the annual new car/locomotive delivery. The ship is then chartered for the ensuing 4 months to allow the rail ferries to undergo their annual maintenance schedule. As a side note, there is fortnightly RO-CON service to the US west coast. This route does not take passengers. Rotterdam's service from the Islands to San Francisco is also fortnightly, and other than cruise ships is the only passenger vessel service between the US and California. She will be replaced in late 2013 by one of the two Californian built liners, at which time she goes into an enhanced maintenance schedule combined with inter-island cruising allowing for service to 2025. Designs from the years 1975-Present will be accepted (as the fleet of 11 ships was purchased in small batches over the last 40 years). Design selection will be made by myself (TimothyC) in conjunction with Voyager989 and M.I.Rielly-Collette. I look forward to seeing what is produced. |

About time I start drawing again. Ace convinced me, I'm in! I am still a bit short on time though, so I might drop out eventually. |

It might not be over until there are several winners - it's fully likely that the 1975 era ships are still in service, sailing the waters with grace and class. |

The goal, light ship displacement, should be approximately 15500 to 16000 tons, but any value is acceptable so long as it can be justified. Capacity for 200 passenger cars plus 89 commercial vehicles simultaneously. In Norway we have ferry's that can take 140+ cars and 400+ passengers, and they are only 85-90 meters long and around 2500-3000 tons heavy (and this ferry is build for the awesome Norwegian weather). so 15500-16000 tons is a huge tanker... |

2500-3000 tons is roughly..... well let's say, 100 meters long, 5 meters deep, 10 meters wide. let's say that the vehicle deck is thus 8*80 meters, so 3 cars wide and 14 cars long. 42 cars per deck, so more then 3 full decks filled with cars. so yeah, I would like to see data for these ferry's, as my own research showed that 15500 tons would be on the small side for the car decks neccesary, if I would like to have the vehicles all on 2 decks. if you take it to 4, yeah, you can go a lot smaller, but that would require vehicle decks on or below the waterline, which is beneath the safety level I would want my ship. |

Note: I didn't read number "6." ....Berths... (825 passe... This is MF "Vikingen" build in 92 she is only 84 meter long, and can take 84 cars (95+ if she is allowed to use the Hanging car deck) here tonnage is 2631 tons. The MF "Melderskin" is and two deck car ferry with capacity of 140 cars and 400 passengers. (she can take four cars in with on the upper deck and three ... on the lower deck.) here tonnage is only 1974 because she doesn't have the upper salon deck. instead she have it bellow deck. I have never seen this ferry stop due to weather. and I have traveled on them at one of the worst route in West Norway, specially when the weather turns bad. But If we ad restaurants, cabins for passengers and so one... but then we need bigger hull than 100 meters (6. As many passenger seats & Berths as practical (825 passengers total must be embarked). Then something like this would work, just a bit smaller: she is 170 meter, and have a beam of 27.5 meter. can take: 1500 passenger and 600 cars. and here tonnage is 25000 tons. So if this is about just an A to B ferry and nothing more then it don't see the problem for and 5000 ton ferry. but if this is about and Cruise ship-ferry thingy.... then I understand that 15000 tonnage number |
