Something like the Ford class Seaward Defence Boat seems to fit the ticket.
Or if you want something already in the bucket there's the Danish version, the Daphne class

Have You thought about something from US post-war surplus?
Like YMS or (somewhat bigger) Auk or Admirable. Or PCS class vessel?

If you're looking for something like that, you could go for something like the Yangtze gunboats.

Some of the older ones have been drawn already.

YMS is good. I think I'll use one of those.

So, considering using the latest model with a few modifications. I imagine if it's turned into a river gunboat, the minesweeping ability would be dropped and a few more guns added. Any ideas where to put them?

Also, is that an SG surface search radar on the mast?

You could add mortars, flamethrowers, assorted machine guns and smaller cannons similarly to how the U.S. equipped its riverine fleet in the Vietnam War
http://www.warboats.org/vietnamboats.htm
In face boats similar to these would probably be very useful to you
I would also look to planes and vehicles used by Biafra and Rhodesia during this time when looking at the military equipment you are planning on using.

Aircraft would probably be Cessnas and trainers, as well as surplus stuff from the 40s. Similar to how the Western-backed forces in the Congo used T-28 Trojans and B-26Ks for CAS.

From memory the congo river is pretty deep but I suppose they be using the tributaries as well, I'd imagine something like a cross between a paddlesteamer and a monitor
