Wouldn't be surprised if some of the North Korean vessels still used them. |

Depth charges offer capabilities torpedoes lack. I'll be a hack and use the Red Storm Rising example... Russian sub is holding position over the wreck of the Andrea Doria, so torpedoes can't get a lock on it for some reason, so the British helicopter drops depth charges to sink it. |

well helicopter mounted is difference in my opinion.... they still are dept charges, but I meant the ship mounted ones... when you have to sail over an enemy sub to sink it, it might have a better chance to sink you then ...... |

Today, some "modern" navy still use depth charge for ASW use - South Korea - Finnish - Sweden These depth charge were usefull in SHALLOW/RESTRICTED water's (sometimes more usefull and much less expensive than a modern ASW torpedoes againt small coastal/midgets sub's). Many others small navy even use these depth charge - North Korean, few othets asiatic/african navy - even few south american's (chilean ?, Peru ?) These depth charge (with usually a +/- 100/250+ kg of explosive) was expected to be totally obsolete the day the midget/coastal sub's began to reach more higher underwater speeds (20+ knots). But in any foreseable future, a MUCH smaller depth charge (with +/- 10/50 kg of explosive) continue to remain effective againt possible frogman/small underwaters crafts attacks |

For the ASW version
You can't make a depth charge go off by shooting at it. Not even lighting it on fire will do the trick. (C4 and Torpex just melts, and TNT burns like wood) You need a priming cap at the very least.![]() ![]() Inthinkable to see depth charge in "air" storage aft, simply on fligth deck (extremely dangerous). Even a only one north korean snipper, with a powerfull good rifle (maybe a 12,7mm long caliber rifle), can be destroy this entire ship by ignitiate aft depth charge ![]() Also, Denmark also uses depth charges on its Thetis class OPV and the Niels Juel Class Corvette. |

You could use it a la limbo or squid and be pretty effective I suppose without having to veer away to launch a torpedo at it. |

For the ASW version
They are not permanent placed there , the depthcharges them selfs are stored inside the ship;)![]() ![]() Inthinkable to see depth charge in "air" storage aft, simply on fligth deck (extremely dangerous). Visby Class Corvette armament: 1 × 57 Mk3 8 × RBS15 Mk2 AShM Mines and depth charges There is no Vertical Launched missile with a DC in it? |

that would be useless, because you could use an torpedo if that was needed.

The ASROC can carry a nuclear depth charge. Not sure if the VL version can.

for a smaller nation, Depth Charges could be fitted to light General Aviation aircraft (like a Cesna). And in areas where the water is really clear, the aircraft wouldn't need high-tech detection gear, just Mk. 1 Eyeballs. Littoral ASW on the cheap. |
