This flag appeared in 1770, used through the 18th century uprisings and adopted as official flag of the very first Hellenic State as created in 1792. In use until 1828.



This flag was adopted during the Great Revolt or Hellenic War for Independence in 1822m but officially adopted in 1828 and remains unchanged since then. Accurate tone of blue is not specified, so there are several variations with lighter or darker blue. This is true for real Hellas, so why not for AU?

Timeline 1770-1864

1770-1774 First Hellenic Uprising under Russo-Turkish War
1774 Treary of Kutsuk Kainartzi gives significant advantages to Hellenes
1788-1791 Second Hellenic Uprising under Russo-Turkish War again.
1792 Treaty of Jassy creates the first Hellenic State, a de facto Russian protectorate/de jure Ottoman suzerainty, under Prince Michael Feodorovich. This
was Catherine the Great's "Greek Plan".
1798 First Constitution of Hellenic Principality
1806-1812 Support of Serbs in their own Uprising officially under Russo-Turkish war, support continue unofficially until 1817.
1807 Ionian Islands given to Principality of Hellas from Russia
1821 Principality of Hellas starts its own War for Independence
1824-1826 Ottoman Empire sends Egyptian Army with Ibrahim to Hellas. The most fierce battles were fought in that period.
1828 Principality of Hellas becomes de facto Independent under Prince Ioannis Kapodistrias. New Constitution aprooved from Parliament
1832 Principality of Hellas is recognised officially as Independent in Treaty of London
1843-44 First large Consitution Revise
1853-56 Hellenic Principality declares neutrality for Crimean War and Prince Ioannis himshelf travels in Thessaly to calm down chieftains who wanted to free Thessaly.
Some would however fought in Crimea under Russian flag voluntary with their private armies. Russian Army had also Hellenic-origin troops since 18th century, organised in battalions.
1864 Principality is self raised to Kingdom under Kind Viaros II (nephew of Ioannis Kapodistrias)

Timeline 1864-1912

1865 New King of Hellas, Viaros II married the Princess Olga of Russia.
1867 First Balkan Alliance signed in Saint Petersburg
1866-69 Cretan Revolt : Hellas supported unofficially Cretans, some Army and Navy officers with small detaches fought in Crete together with voluntaries from mainland.
1870 Crete gains partial autonomy, under a new Ottoman law.
1875-78 Hellas supports official Serbia in their war with Ottomans and in 1877 declares war to Ottoman Empire under the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, attacking from south. Notable is the 1876 agreement between Hellas, Serbia and Montenegro.
1878 Hellas gains Thessaly and southern parts of Epirus and Makedonia under Treaty of Berlin.
1894-1908 Struggle for Makedonia.
1897 Another Cretan Revolt, this time for Independence. Hellenic Kingdom declared the "Principality of Crete", sending Prince Alexander II Feodorovich and one regiment under Colonel
Timoleon Vassos. This regiment participated in several battles in Crete fought in January 1897. Ottoman response was to declare war to Hellas and attacked from the north borders,
surprising government of Athens. Although quite well armed, Hellas was not ready for a large scale war and Hellenic Army defeated and crushed, retreating to south. Only colonel Constatine
Smolenskis and his unit managed to keep positions. Smolenskis became national hero and this catapulted him to Major General. Cretan Regiment ordered to withdrawn for reinforcing Hellenic Army
units in Athens, as government feared that Ottomans would soon reach Athens. Under severe pressure from Great Powers, Ottomans stopped their advance and retreat
in their previous positions.
1898 Cretan Principality established, de jure remaining under Ottoman suzerainty but de facto being under Hellenic control, governed by Alexios II Feodorovich.
1901 Under the 1899 White Paper, Hellenic Armed Forces were completely re-organized, including overhaul of command structure.
1912 Hellenic Kingdom enters Balkan Wars

1912-1913 Balkan Wars, several battles fought against Ottomans and Bulgarians. Treaty of Bucharest (1913) recognized significant gains in land of Hellas, including Aegean Islands

1915-18 Hellenic Kingdom enters WW1 (January 1915). Britain offered to give Cyprus in Hellas if latter enters the Great War. Hellas took also assistance from Entente to create strong military aviation, resulting in establishment of Sedes Air Training/Assembly Center near Thessaloniki in September 1915. France organized and trained the Hellenic Army Aviation and Britain the Naval Aviation. In the ill-fated Gallipoli Campaign Hellas sent one brigade and some ships. Later in year, Hellas sent reinforcements to Serbia. In following year Entente created the "Allied Front" in Balkans against Central Powers, supporting also Hellenic Army offensives in East Thrace, keeping pressure on Bulgarians and Ottomans. Progress was slow, due to fierce resistance and Entente failed in reaching Constantinople, which remained in Ottoman hands.

1918 Creation of Federal Kingdom of Yugoslavia. This is my AU Yugoslavia. After WW2 the Federal Kingdom became Socialistic Republic of Yugoslavia (AU).

1919-1923 Hellenic Kingdom gains all parts of the Thrace that Hellas managed to occupy during the war become part of the Kingdom, which reached now the Black Sea. In the west, Autonomous North Epirus also became part of Hellenic Kingdom. An exchange of populations between Ottoman Empire and Hellas also occur, with about 1 million Hellenic population (remaining in North Anatolia, known as Pontos) immigrated in Thrace and about half million Ottomans immigrated to Ottoman Empire. Some Hellenic origin Rumelians from north also immigrated south. In East Rumelia and North Makedonia settled many Vlachs, to live together with other Slavic speaking populations (with were though under Hellenic influence).

1925 After prolonged negotiations resulting from war-time agreement between British and Hellenic governments regarding future of Cyprus, the Despotate of Cyprus, dominated by Hellenes, but remaining under nominal British protectorate, has been finally established and ruled by Cypriot Church Archbishops until 1959. Britain expanded its military bases in Cyprus in mid-war, due to the significant strategic position of the island in East Mediterranean.

1930-1934 A Treaty of friendship signed between Hellas and Turkey (like in real world). In this AU scenario, long negotiations were made for the Ecumenical Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople starting in 1930 ended in 1935 establishing the Patriarchate State, an enclave in Constantinople city similar with Vatican in many ways (except size, Patriarchate State is smaller).

1936 Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits

1940-1941 - On 28 October 1940 Hellas is invaded by Italy attempting to expand it's domination in Central Mediterranean. Despite nominal superiority, poorly prepared and led Italian forces are stopped by better motivated and enjoying favorable terrain Hellenic troops. Subsequently Italians are being pushed back to Albania with great losses. At that time Britain proposed sending reinforcements to Hellas, but Athens, despite the strain of the war effort, refused. Reason was that Germany, for various reasons, preferred not to get involved in war in the Balkans, but would certainly react if any Allied troops arrived in the peninsula. At the same time, Italy, knowing that as long there aren't any British troops in Greece they can't expect direct German assistance, and with their army already badly beaten in North Africa from British Forces also, become ready to negotiate armistice with Hellas based on status quo ante. The Armistice between Hellas and Italy was signed in March 1941. The only large scale sea battle between Hellas and Italy was the Battle of Otranto Strait, in 22-23 November 1940. Hellas lost 1 cruiser, 3 destroyers, 1 submarine and BB Salamis was severely damaged. She received punishment and thought to be sunk (Italian newspapers wrote that next day that Regia Marina sunk a Hellenic battleship north of Corfu Island) but, Salamis' crew managed to take her south round Peloponnese directly to Neorion Shipyard, which had the only dockyard large enough to accommodate her for repairs. 8 months later, BB Salamis was ready for action.

No, of course not. It is not easy to re-invent history and now I am in the most difficult part.

Two issues: If you look at your country info, you write that the largest city is Thessaloniki, but when looking at the demographic chart, Athens is. Athens, of course can be BOTH the capital and largest city! Also, in your historical timeline, you mention a certain Viaros II. Aside from the odd-sounding name, who was Viaros I? I flatter myself having some advanced knowledge of Greek (and Balkan) history, but I cannot recall any character with that name.

Ioannis Kapodistrias had 3 brothers: Viaros, Augustine and George. In this scenario, Ioannis Kapodistrias was not assisinated, but lived until 1857. All brothers except George reign, Viaros only for just over a year. That was "Viaros I". Second Viaros supposed to was Augustine's son, name is indeed odd.
