July 1942 - The Texas Air Force activates its first heavy bombardment group, equipped with B-24D Liberators built by the new Consolidated plant in Fort Worth:
Painted in colors very similar to those used by the RAF heavies, when deployed to Europe these Liberators were attached to the RAF's Bomber Command in September, flying night raids into Germany to conserve their numbers.
Also activated this month is the first long range interceptor squadron, the 79th Fighter Squadron, equipped with P-38F Lightnings, registered as F-9As in the Texas Air Force.
