I checked out the Tico and Burkes, and figured the thing to do was to hide the intakes and stacks behind the lip structure, but they're there.

The third vessel of the class, RZMS Pallamara was built with turrets from the Hawaii, and since there was no tower to reuse, It was decided to to just complete the vessel as a giant command ship. This is the final configuration.

By the 1980s there was considerable concern about the state of the Reserve Fleet, as many of the vessels dated back to WWII, and serviceability in an actual wartime scenario was in doubt. Needing a dedicated ASW platform, the nine Medusa Klasse vessels, (all named after feminine monsters) based on the American Oliver Hazard Perry Class were constructed. Many cost cutting measures were enacted for these vessels, Ability to launch the Standard SM-1 missile was lost, replaced with a ASROC/Harpoon box launcher, and a heavier Bofors 120mm was given to the class to make it more suitable for general patrol duties. To further cut costs, older radar systems from obsolete vessels were also employed.

When introduced, the class weren't highly rated in public opinion, being referred to as "Kamaikaze Craft," and "Ten Minute Frigates" for their lack of amament. Spending most of their time in the Reserve Fleet, these vessels were reactivated and modernized in the early 2000s as the pirate problems in both the Malucca Strait and off Somalia became more of a menace. Contrary to other nation's habits for dealing with piracy, the Pallamaran books were very clear on how to deal with it, preferring the old school approach--Any pirates caught in the act were to be sunk and any surviviors to be executed. To help with response time, Landsweer gunships were embarked, even though the piracy policy was criticized by a number of nations and international organizations.

Pictured here is the class as originally delivered. I will update with a modernized version later.

As the 1960s progressed, there was desire to upgrade the fleet with more modern destroyers, since many were FRAM conversions which dated back to WWII. The Choice for this were the Italian Audace Class, since they put an impressive amount of firepower on a reasonable sized hull, but from the beginning, there were concerns about the design's suitability for the larger distances of the Indian Ocean, as these vessels had been designed for the more confined waters of the Med, resulting in the first of several redesigns.

Ultimately, the class became a textbook of "Capability Creep," as it grew larger with each redesign and more features added, until the end result was closer to a cruiser than the originally envisioned destroyer, but still keeping the basic design. though planned to enter service in the mid to late 1970s, it would be the early to mid 1980s before the six vessels were finally completed. A popular class to serve on due their roomy layout, they are currently being replaced with the modified Horizon type DDGs, being relocated to reserve. This vessel is shown in its unmodernized state, after the RAM upgrade.

My numbers are on the first page of this thread. Total Defence budget is 76 Billion or so, of which the navy gets the biggest share of. Actually, it isn't even close to rivaling the US fleet. It is larger than than the Japanese or Italian Fleets, however.

While I do need to go back and count the ships in service, some of the designs I've posted here are currently reserve units in mothballs, or heading there, so it makes the fleet look larger than it really is.

Looking at the numbers, it's likely that either the last 3 or last 6 of the unbuilt FREMM will be cancelled as major naval units are ordered in batches of 3. That would leave 9 frigates to replace the Ariadne Klasse on a one for one basis as those shuffle off to reserve, along with the Athena Klasse DDG arriving in service which will replace the last of the Didos in active service. Currently, then that would mean as far as major surface units in active service being as follows:

1 Dynastie Klass CV
2 Cavour Class CVS
3 Stadt Klasse BCG
3 Athena Klasse DDG, 3 more building
3 Dido Klasse DDG (rerated as CG)
6 Cybele Klasse FFG, 3 building, 6 more in doubt
3 Ariadne Klasse FFG
9 Medusa Klasse FFG/OPV
Submarines: SSK: 10
Amphibious Warfare 6
Mine Warfare Vessels 9
Patrol Craft/FAC: 15
-----------------------------
70 vessels, not including Auxillary and support.

Of this number, the Medusas are going back to reserve as soon as they can be replaced, along with 6 mine warfare vessels, while the patrol and FAC are going to end up being replaced with a new class of vessel which will see that category reduced to 6-9 units.

The JMSDF totals are:

2 helicopter carriers
47 destroyers and frigates
18 submarines
9 amphibious ships
29 mine warfare ships
9 patrol craft
---------------------
114 vessels

Theoretically, I should be ahead of Japan, since I spend more money, and have about the same manpower. Looks like I need to get to work on more designs!

I've been putting this off forever, and it's still completely a WIP, but so far here is my carrier project, to be built during the 1990s. I don't know a lot about carriers, so I expect there will be lots of errors. The most advanced carrier design that could be procured was the Forrestal, and that was during the early 1980s, so Pallamaran designers had to try to evolve the design, without departing too far from it. I'm wondering however, could that christmas tree mast and all those radars be replaced with a single Thales S1850M system?

I will credit when the design is ready, and I know I still have defensive systems to add.

The main problem I have with this design is less one of practicality and more of the fact it's just plain Fugly. I'd love to have it towed offshore somewhere and used for torpedo practice. It would make a beautiful reef someday.
