How survivable would the average offshore platform be against missiles and gunfire?
Depends: are they currently full of oil or not?
Aside from that, those rigs are designed to withstand conditions that most ships run from. As long as you offload the flammables, the rig should be able to take one or two hits- which is about what any warship would be able to take. Remember, the rig is generally 'hollow', and a lot of the blast force that would be contained in a ship will be lost in atmosphere on the rig!

Well keep in mind, as I somewhat alluded to before, US forces did engage armed oil rigs in the Gulf/Hormuz.

Here's a bunch of links you guys might want to read:

This line sticks out:
Quote:
The high-explosive shells did negligible blast damage to the steel-lattice platforms, but eventually set them ablaze.
It seems that the platforms held up fairly well, given the circumstances and the amount of artillery directed at them. It would be interesting to see how many shells were fired before any concrete effect was obtained... like the fire actually starting.

I won't say that they would make any kind of lasting fortifications- but used properly (which it sounds like the Iranians didn't do) they could have made a heck of a dent in an approaching force.

In limited war perhaps. In an all out war they'd be destroyed by long ranged missiles or submarines as early in the war as possible.
Like you said, "they're built to resist stuff most ships will run from" because they can't run anywhere which makes them perfect targets for cruise and ballistic missiles.
In an all out war keeping you from getting the oil is more important to your enemy than for him to capture it.

Anything above a corvette in size is going to be overkill for defending drilling rigs.

If one is insistant about a whole ship for the task, something like a LPH would seem to make a great deal more sense. Oil rigs are distributed targets, so fast and numerous defensive craft (ie helos) would seem appropriate. Anything that couldn't be whacked with a few helo-launched SSMs is so powerful a fleet in being as to demand counter from one's own major forces.
