ChK-1 class Submarine Chaser:

First class of dedicated subchasers ordered by Koko no Kaigun, the Kusentei-1 ships started their design phase as carbon-copies of the No.1 units under construction in Japan. Order was for a class of eight, a number deemed necessary to protect home waters from a possible Soviet and American submarine threath given the vicinity of Petropavlovsk, the Aleutians and Midway island. The first two units, ChK-1 and ChK-2 had been already laid down when the Tomozuru incident happened. construction of both ships was temporarily suspended as stability issues were worked out. Since the two Kokoan units were far less advanced than the IJN No.1 units (two of them were already in service) modifications could be more torough: Draft was increased from 1,4 to 2,1m by increasing hull depth. This increased the displacement from the planned 266 to 361Tons. speed decreased to 21knots from the planned 24 but performance was still deemed satisfactory. A third units, ChK-3 started construction in January 1935 to the new specifications. All three were in service by early 1936: they were armed with a twin 40mm machine guns and 36 depth charges. The other 5 units were reordered to a further modified desig that would later became the ChK-4 class.
[ img ]
All three ships survived long enough during the war to be refitted with an improved hydropohone, increased depth charge complement, a Type-13 air-search-radar and three single 25mm machine guns. In september 1945 all three recieved a peculiar blue camouflage in an attempt to made them less visible through enemy submarine periscopes. During Koko uprisings Chk-2 and 3 crews joined the rebels. ChK-2 herself was sunk in December 1945 by IJA planes launched from the CVE Yamashio maru while she tried to attack a small reinforcement convoy bound for Kaminato, in one of the multiple direct engagements between IJA, IJN and KnK that occured around Koko waters at the peak of the uprisigns. Chk-1 fell victim of one of the may US bombings against Kokoan harbors made during the early months of 1946. ChK-3 surrendered herself to the US forces by sailing towards Midway hoisting a white flag, this did not avoid her to be shelled by the Destroyers USS Castle (DD-720) and USS Landsdale (DD-766) before proper comunications could be made. Luckily for her crew the only hit on target destroyed the 7-m whaleboat without harming anyone.

After the war ChK-3 returned to Kokoan waters only to be scuttled off Tamura, Tojima Island.

Ki-13 Class Submarine:

During the early 30's under the Washington Naval Treaty restrictions, Koko no kaigun choose to build a single submarine based on the Kaichu-VI Type to replace the older Ki-1 and Ki-2 units. The ship was to be 76m long with a displacement of 940t surfaced and 1.200t submerged, armed with four 533mm torpedo tubes a 76mm gun and a single 13mm machine gun. Test depth was 75 meters, speed 19knots surfaced and 8,2 submerged, with a 8.000nm endurance surfaced (at 12knots) and 90nm submerged (at 3,5 knots).
Ki-13 was laid down at Kumoi Arsenal in early 1933, launched in 1934 and commissioned in 1935.

While the ship was under construction, Koko, under the new Mormoto's Government, decided to ditch treaty limitations, ordering four more units in order to replenish the fleet with smaller and quicker-to-be-built units other than the large submarines planned. All built at Kumoi Ki-15,17,19 and 22 were laid down between December 1934 and January 1937. They were all in service by 1938.
During the war all units operated closer to home waters often in company of the similar-sized Ki-3 boats, their main fields of action were the aleutian and Midway waters. All lived long enough to see the start of Koko uprisings, during which Ki-13 and Ki-17 were sunk. The three surviving ships were decommissioned and scrapped at the end of the war.

Suiraitei 4 Class Torpedo Boat:

Next class of torpedo boats to be built for Koko no Kaigun after the failure and redesign of the precending Suiraitei-1 class, the N°4 boats were japanese Otoris with no modifications to maximize speed construction. Six ships -numbered 4 to 9- were ordered, entering service between 1936 and 1939.
[ img ]
All specifications remained the same except for the anti-aircraft armament: Suiraitei 4 and 6 were armed with a quadruple 13mm machine gun (in place of the single 40mm of the Otoris), al other ships fitted a twin 25mm machine gun.
[ img ]
During the Pacific War the sisters made up Goaitei2 and 3 and could be assempled as Suirai Sentai 12 if needed thanks to their 30,5knot top speed. Deployed in support of Koko no Kaigun and IJN units during the invasion of Indonesia all six units were stationed in Singapore from February to August 1942. Suiraitei 2 having the unenviable distinction of beign the first Koko no kaigun major units to be sunk during the war, hit by British planes on April 6th.
After the start of the Solomon Islands Campaign the ships were moved to rabaul and employed for convoy escort roles. Suiraitei 6 was sunk in 1943, with N°5 and 9 following in 1944. The two surviving units returned to Koko in late 1944 and were refitted with a Type 13 air-search-radard, extra depth charge complement and a new anti-aircraft suite made up by two triple, a twin and three single 25mm machine guns, for a total of 11 barrels. A green camouflage patters was also added.
[ img ]
Suiraitei 8 was sunk in July 1945 by an US submarine while trying to escort a reinforcement convoy to Guam. Suiraitei 7, now the only unit still afloat, returned once again to koko for a second refit. the aft 120mm gun was landed and the anti-aircraft suite further increased to four triple and five single 25mm machine guns, for a total of 17 barrels. Depth charge complement was further increased and an hydrophone fitted. Camouflage pattern was revised once again, with an experimental blue-green scheme supposed to conceal the ship when operating closer to the shore.
[ img ]
At the start of Koko uprisings Suiraitei-7 crew joined the rebels and ultimately survived the ensuing onslaught. After the ceasefire between the Unites States and Koko was singed, the ship was interned to Midway and then decommissioned and scrapped at the end of the war.

F-22 Class Minelayer:

In it's effort to circumvent the London Naval Treaty Koko no Kaigun issued the requirement for another class treaty-skirting ships like the Hayabusa class seaplane tenders. The resulting class was to be the Minelayer class Fusetsukan-19, whose three ships were rodered for construction in late 1931, with the first starting construction in 1932. Later on, because of the shfting policies of the new Morimoto's government, it was decided to reorder the last two units, F-22 and F-24 to a smaller design.
The newly designed ships were loosely based on the Japanese Okinoshima, but to a more careful eye there were more differencies than affinities. The hull, while retaining similar overall dimensions, had a decidedly different underwater section and a completely redesigned stern. The ventilation system for the engire room was also modified. The searchlight platforms were different, both in appearance and positioning, the same applied to the RDF room. The layout of the bridge deckhouses was revised too. Overall, the ship was armed with four 140mm guns in two twin mounts, fitted in shielded positions, one forward, one aft. two single 76mm guns and two twin 13mm machine guns made up the anti-aircraft armament. Up to 500 naval mines and 22 depth charges could be carried. Top speed was 20knots and endurance 9.000nm at 10knots. Crew was 445 officers and men. Like the Japanese large minelayers a catapult was fitted at midship to operate a single Kawanishi E7K floatplane.
Fusetsukan-22, the first of the two ships, was laid down in 1934, launched in 1935 and commissioned in 1936.
[ img ]
The second ship, Fusetsukan-24, was laid down in January 1936, launched in 1937 and commissioned in record-time by the end of the year. She could be told apart from her sister because she had the fog horn pipes routed on the starboard side (F-22 had it on port) and because she sported three twin 25mm machine guns as light anti-aircraft armament. F-22 woudl recieve the same upgrade by late 1941.
[ img ]
During the war they supported most major KnK and IJN naval operations, from the invasion of the Aleutians to the attempted invasion of Espiritu Santo, during which F-22 was sunk by planes from the USS Saratoga.
F-24 took part in the evacuation of the Solomon Islands, then was deployed to the Aleutians. Here, in late 1944, she was caught and bombed by US B-24 and badly damaged. Five bombs hit the stern and quarterdeck destroying the aft 140mm mount, toppling the mainmast and crippling the engines. The stern was further damaged when the explosion of some deck-stored depth charges set a fire below deck, jamming the rudder. Down by the stern and listing 24° to starboard the ship burned for hours, her sinking was avoided thanks to the heroic damage-control work put up by the crew and by the fact that the ship was carrying a reduced complement of mines, which the crew managed to move and secure to avoid them beign caught in the fire.
Towed back to Koko, the ship was moored in hokuto's harbor on Tenji island were she recieved temporary repairs before beign sent to Taniguchi (Yomei island) for more thorough works.
Since her engine damaged was deemed irreparable, effectively cutting her top speed from 20 to 15 knots, it was decided to turn her into a testbed for full-scale examination of Thiarian electronics, obtained in late 1943 by submarine KI-33 during a bilateral exchange between KnK and Thiarian Navy.
During the works the 140mm guns (the aft moutnwas now inoperable) were landed and replaced by twin 127mm ones, a new, smaller mainmast was fitted and the aircraft catapult removed, replaced by an expanded aft deckhouse, the 76mm guns were removed too. Anti-aircraft armament was augmented with the addition of seven triple, a twin and twelve single 25mm machine guns, bringing the total count to 41 barrels. The older 4,5m rangefiner for the 140mm guns was removed and replaced by a new composite rangefinder-director set for the 127mm guns, directors for the 25mm machine guns was also aded. And hydrophone was added and the deptch charge complement increased as much as possible, with the entire mine inventory landed. the foremast was modificed to fit a Type22 surface-search radar. Finally, electronics built in Koko based on Thiarian documentations and samples were fitted: R3FD surface, R2FA air search, R4CA air fire control raders and a R6R high frequency direction finder. No camouflage was apinted except for a fake bow wave to give the impression of an higher top speed.
[ img ]
Examination of Thiarian sistems continued for most of 1945, even after Thiaria signed an armistice with the Allies. Then on November 6th 1945, few days after Koko uprisings had started, F-24 blew up while berthed at Fuyuki. It was alter revealed that the ship own crew had deliberately scuttled tehir ship to avoid the electronics to fall into IJA hands. F-24 wreck was raised and scrapped after the war.

F-22 1934-1935-1936 - Sunk 1943
F-24 1936-1937-1937 - Scuttled 1945

Note:
Someone might have noticed the absence from this thread of the aforementioned Minelayer (Fusetsukan) 19, whose pennant fits between the F-18 and the F-22 class. This is just because I've chosen, for the most part, to depict ships chronologically by commissioning date.
