IT can be, but it can also be smooth. It depends on what you want.
For a larger ship, i would say a door that fits over the hull, because when a wave bashes onto it, it can use the strenght of the hull to take it.

But it takes ore space...
And when your door is on the hull, and not in it. You can create larger doors.
Because when you use one that goes straight with the hull, it has to be as big as the hole is in the hull.
