The Texas Navy also developed destroyers to protect its capital ships against the threat of coastal and seagoing torpedo boats. The first class developed was the Abilenes, authorized in 1901 and commissioned starting in 1904. Four ships composed the first class: Abilene, Amarillo, Alvarado, and Atlanta:

They weighed in at 393 tons, and were 180' long on the waterline. Their anti-torpedo boat battery consisted of two M1900 3"/50 guns and five M1884 6lb QF guns (though only three were mounted). They also carried a pair of 18" torpedo tubes firing the larger Mk2 Whitehead torpedos.

They were not as fast as desired, their maximum speed was only 24 knots, but they had the same range as the capital ships and did not need refueling except when the larger ships did. Their crews numbered 43 and were crammed into very cramped accommodations.

The Abilenes left much to be desired in a torpedo boat destroyer, but they were a good start.

The torpedo boat fleet also expanded in this decade to expand the protected area of the Texas coast.

The #7 class were bigger than their predecessors, faster, and had a longer range.

The #7s had a maximum speed of 29 knots and a cruising range of 387 miles, which enabled them to be concentrated at any Texas port instead of being tied to a single location (the major weakness of the #1 class). They were identically armed as the #1 boats.

A total of 8 were built between 1900 and 1909.

The last ships commissioned between 1900 and 1909 were two submarines, officially called "submarine torpedo boats". They were American C-Class subs built in the United States under contract. They augmented the coast defense arsenal of the navy, tasked to attack ships during the day while submerged while the torpedo boats attacked at night (if possible).

A new class of armored cruiser and a battle cruiser were authorized and laid down this decade, but they were not completed until the early years of the next.

Hello Redhorse!

This really is getting better and better... and it was already very good to begin with. One of the best AUs in the bucket!

Greetings
GD

Very nice additions.
I like the high freeboard of the Abilene and #7 classes, certainly they would be more seaworthy than some of their European contemporaries.

Great job as always on this AU, Redhorse. This time period is one that I know very little about in terms of naval engineering and technology, and the progression of your designs has helped me to understand it a lot better.
