Suzume class large destroyer

[ img ]

The Suzume (雀, 'Sparrow') class destroyers were the ultimate evolution of Osoran destroyer design, emerging two years into the World War. They were developed as a response to the Antaran Heidi class destroyers and a comparison could be easily drawn. Suzume featured a similiar speed thanks to her high pressure boilers that allow for a max battle speed of 39 knots. As with her counterpart, her main battery consists of eight 127mm/50 Type 13 guns in four turrets, an arrangement unusual for Osoran destroyers. Her torpedo battery is also similiar with two quadruple 610mm launchers firing the oxygen powered Type 8 torpedo, including quick reloads for both launchers.

Suzume was the first Osoran destroyer to feature fire control radar and surface search at launch. They would also be upgraded with air search radar sets later in the war. The class was very large and had a standard displacement of 3200 tonnes, hence the Daikuchikukan (大型駆逐艦, 'large destroyer') classification.

Displacement - 3200 tonnes standard
Speed - 39 knots
Range - 7800nm at 16 knots

I want to do at least one class of every major naval power just to display the design language of every navy, but Antara is still going to be my primary focus.

Of course I need to rewrite a whole bunch of history too. Eish.

Ember class destroyer

[ img ]

The Embers and Cambrias differed from the previous classes of destroyers with their newer armament of 533mm torpedoes, replacing the 450mm torpedoes that had been the standard before. Ember was also the first Antaran destroyer since the early torpedo boats to carry reloads. These destroyers were also reinforced with an additional pair of 100mm guns on the forward flanks that allowed her to fire two guns at more aggressive angles. The speed was only a marginal improvement over the Cambrias, going up to 30 knots from 29.

Commissioned a year before the Great War, the Embers were first in line as a part of the battle fleet screen and saw extensive service during the war. ARS Avelio collided with the destroyer HMWS Majestic but managed to limp back to port during the 2nd Battle of New Blackwick - and in the same engagement the ARS Tetra was lost, but sank the cruiser HMWS Nescombe with one of her four torpedoes. Cassidy was lost after an engagement off New Kinchester after ramming HMWS E-21 after failing to sink her with depth charges. Preston was lost in a separate engagement in the same region a week later. Cutter and Lolita were responsible for critically damaging battleship Orienta during the 1st Battle of New Blackwick, however upon attempting to escape from her torpedo run Lolita sprung a leak and flooded after going past her design speed and was run down by the Wesmeric battle line.

DeWitt and Caulfield were both lost during the Battle of Hampton Is. as their flotilla made repeated torpedo and harassment attacks against the Wesmeric battle lines. Dozens of torpedoes were fired with a few apparent hits from Avelio, Judd and DeWitt. Parks got separated in a storm during the battle, was never found and is reported sunk in action. All remaining Embers were scrapped by 1334 after being deemed obsolete.

Evinheim Naval Treaty of 1323

One of the terms of the Evinheim Concordat, which ended the Great War, was the halting of capital ship construction for ten years by the 'losing' side of the war, namely Wesmere and Saliam. The terms that related to naval affairs were emphasized to be temporary until a greater treaty could be negotiated to better decide the future the world's superpowers. This treaty would nullify those terms expressed by the Concordat, however if common ground could not be reached, the terms of the Concordat would remain in effect.

The rapid buildup of Antaran naval power shortly before, during and after the Great War caught the attention of the other superpowers, and the so-called 'destruction' of the Wesmeric Navy at the hands of Antara and Siegmaria created a panic amongst the world leaders. A naval arms race had begun to manifest and it became clear that negotiations between the superpowers needed to take place.

Talks took place from 13 February to 29 April 1323.

Negotiators

Antara
Morgan F. Reyes, Minister of the Navy (February)
Nora M. Jacobs, Minister of the Navy (March)
Siegmaria
Otto Altenburg, Großfürst der Kriegsmarine (Grand leader of the Navy)
Wesmere
Sir Blake Relish, High Lord of the Navy
Sir George Hayworth, Prime Minister
Libeccia
Maffeo Veneti, Ministro della Marina (Minister of the Navy)
Saliam
Marius Bellegarde, Ministre de la Défense (Minister of Defence)
Desnia
Mikhail Sidorov, Minister of the Navy
Osora
Genjirō Hanekawa, Bōei Daijin (Minister of Defence)
Hayato Fujimura, Kaigun Daijin (Minister of the Navy)

Signatories

Antara
Emperor William V
Siegmaria
Kaiser Heinrich von Friedeberg
Wesmere
King Neville III
Libeccia
King Dante VI
Saliam
Prime Minister Émile Bachelot
Desnia
Prime Minister Nikolai Ruslanovich
Osora
Empress Kiriko

Summary of terms

Wesmere proposed to keep to the ten year break of capital construction (until 1333) so long as it was extended to all other signing nations. The parties to are object were the Osorans, who were beginning to pick up speed with their naval construction, and the Antarans, who were concerned about their vessels currently under construction. In light of this, Siegmaria put another idea on the table: current projects would be allowed to be completed provided they met certain tonnage and number requirements.

Antara would be allowed to complete the three Empress Victoria battleships, Osora would be allowed to finish three of their four battleships, however one of either the Mikawari or Akizumi would need to be scrapped. Siegmaria would be allowed to construct the three Schardler class ships and Wesmere would only be allowed to finish two of the three Insuperable class. Libeccia, Saliam and Desnia were allowed one vessel only.

Total capital ship tonnage (a vessel whose main armament was greater than 11"/280mm) was limited between signing nations. Limits were made on a per nation case and were as follows:

Siegmaria : 540 000 tonnes
Antara : 420 000 tonnes
Wesmere : 240 000 tonnes
Saliam : 200 000 tonnes
Osora : 420 000 tonnes
Libeccia : 200 000 tonnes
Desnia : 180 000 tonnes

All nations had colonial holdings and requirements for trade protection to various extents, and thus were all allowed large fleets based on their holdings and partipation during the Great War. Wesmere and Saliam were among the most powerful combatants of the war, as Wesmere had lost the war and some of her holdings, the nation was severly punished. Saliam, now a vassal of Siegmaria, was let off lightly. Antara gained many territories and the ability to operate in Aemore, whilst Osora now had bases across most of the Scyllic Ocean and was a rising naval power, thus both nations were allowed great tonnage limits. The limits were matched between Osora and Antara as they were direct rivals in the Scyllic Ocean, however the Antarans argued they were given too little. Antara also argued that Saliam was a puppet, and together with Siegmaria, they had too much share.

Additionally, these capital needed to displace up to 35k tonnes standard with a maximum gun caliber of 18.1"/460mm. Navies were expected to modify their vessels under construction to fit the limits. After the ten year gap was passed capital ship production may continue with the same tonnage and gun caliber limits. Participating nations would be required to scrap vessels if they exceeded the limits, which was indeed what occurred, in large numbers following the signing of the treaty.

Osora brought forward the proposal to allow for a single existing capital ship to be converted to an aircraft carrier and be ignored by the tonnage restrictions, with Antara making a counter proposal of four ships. It was eventually settled with two vessels for all nations. Antara would convert King James I and St Isaac and rename them to Carpathia and Carmilla. Osora would convert Notomi and Kaishiro. Siegmaria would convert Ortenberg and Rotenstein. Siegmaria would convert Sagacious and Effulgent. Saliam would convert the Dévastateur. Desnia and Libeccia made no conversions.

After limits for capital ships had been agreed upon, discussion turned to large combatants, which included cruisers and aircraft carriers. Signing nations would not be allowed to construct any warships with a tonnage greater than 10k tonnes standard and with a gun caliber exceeding 8"/203mm, other than that already agreed upon previously. Siegmaria made the proposal to limit the total tonnage of cruiser type vessels, thereby defining a cruiser as a surface warship between 3000-10000 tonnes. Total cruiser limits per nation were as follows:

Siegmaria : 400 000 tonnes
Antara : 340 000 tonnes
Wesmere :180 000 tonnes
Saliam : 140 000 tonnes
Osora : 300 000 tonnes
Libeccia : 140 000 tonnes
Desnia : 120 000 tonnes

The treaty would remain in effect until 1343.

So I was struck with inspiration looking through this thread a few weeks ago, and St Azia kept bringing a question up in my mind: If she is meant to be the ultimate Antaran light cruiser, what would her heavy cruiser cousin look like?
Obviously the heavy cruiser had fallen out of favor with the Antaran Navy at the time, but the question was still there nonetheless.
I spoke with Shigure about the idea, and he was in favor of it, so I began work on presenting the CH-11C proposal. It's a 1948 design featuring twelve of the then-new 203mm triple autoloading mounts, and is essentially a St Azia if she hit the gym more often.
Without any further ado, I present CH-11C!
