William Beardmore 1912 CV,

well float plane carrier but it does have landing and take off decks (not that you can really use the landing deck) and it has a elevator so its a real CV :P (just a bit slow and exciting to land on).

That is a very interesting concept. Just shows how much vision was shown by inventors. It is not far off what the aircraft carrier ended up looking like. Put the flight deck up one level over the hangar area and instant modern carrier. 100 feet longer and it would have been good to go right through to the end of WW2.

The way it is with the landing area in the middle might be ok with some advanced pilots. The wind if it can be kept from directly ahead would funnel through at a rate where the ship and wind speed would make the landing on speed very low. The problem would be the fluctuations in airflow caused by the superstructures.

You are sure it is a 1912 design :?:
It is an official design of the British Admiralty or it is a private design (I think rather to a private design)
For this period, it seems to me very advanced, very "ahead of its time" design (=> a carrier-purpose built design)
(usually the early world first seaplane-carriers of the 1911-1914 period are much simpler & are from coastal-steamer civil ships or ageing warships conversion)

For a British ? design, the six single guns at the back, I imagine it must be either a BL 6"in/45cal Mk XII or a BL 4"in/45cal Mk VIII or a QF 4"in/45cal Mk IV gun model ??? (very doubtful imagining AA guns in 1912) :roll:

Yes its a real design it was offered to the British Admiralty by Beardmore in 1912.
(and the guns in front are 4' not sure what MK just picked one that looked like the pic will swap if I can find out what they really are ?)

A very interesting design, but not bad for 1912.
This will be a great addition to the archive when its completed. Probably one of the earliest purpose-built carriers ever designed, if not the first.

I think the 4in would be the same Mark V as those carried by the Arethusa and Bristol Class cruisers of the period with full shields.

Has anybody done them ? My week Google Fu isn't finding any (well lots of WW2 ships :cry: why did the RN reuse names and not number stuff, not having dates on HMS ships is a great pain)

Hey JSB, it is on the RN weapons sheet, MkV 4", second from left looks the same as the one you want/ are using.
