Post war the Algerine class minesweepers were used in a dual role - also coastal escort with Squid forward of the bridge. This design was based on that layout but was cancelled due to budget cuts and concern over the metal hull with modern magnetic mines. The R.N.did later build a metal hulled minesweeper in the River class. This design was approximately 230ft in length, and featured a d.p 3-in/50 besides the single 40mm Bofors, and of course Squid forward with a sonar. I've based the drawing on Freidman's information, but I will probably modify for AU.

Thanks guys and yes, the Soviets had no qualms about building big in minesweepers, but I would say the R.N. made the right decision here as the budget just wouldn't allow this.

Its actually bit pity (IMO) that the dual role 2nd class sloop/ocean minesweepers weren't pursued that much in the post WWII world. One could argue such ship to be lot more usefull than ships like the fast but utterly single armed escorts that some of the western nations build in the 50's.

Good thing is that we can always set the course differently in our AUs

Thanks again, and yes interesting design. I can't prempt our AU, but suffice to say we are intending to address the need for a larger fleet with more types that still include the single purpose ships but also allow for lower end roles. The RN did keep in service cruisers and 'frigates' from the WWII era, well into the 1950's; and yes, partly because they still had an obsolete fleet, but also because they continued to serve well. As the Algerines were partly modernised for longer service, with the Squid forward, this design becomes the obvious replacement. I was counting on the deep water role and some improvements in countering magnetic mines to allow it to be built.
