I found the original drawing in the book Vanguard to Trident by Eric Grove. The design was quite well advanced but was cancelled by the then defence secretary John Nott in 1981.

Eric Grove is my dissertation supervisor... Unfortunately, half the books for my dissertation are by him as well... at least he thinks it's a complement :D

For the design, I'm not a big fan of the forward sea wolf launcher. Mounting one on each side feels... wasteful really, when you could just as easily mount on on the centreline with some redesign.
Still, the drawing is very good. Very pretty.

You were lucky to have such a good teacher.I liked the design and if it hadn't of been for that little toady Nott it could well have come to fruition. His wholesale scrapping of many RN ships was a contributory factor in the lead up to the Falklands war.I can't believe they actually Knighted him. :x

Excellent stuff Bombhead. A really good drawing of an odd ship. Nelson sounds grand but had they been built I guess they would have taken names of cities following on from the Bristol and Sheffield classes.

We can all shake our heads in amazement but my guess is had we got Type 43 we'd have far fewer Type 22 and today the end result would still be the same, the Type 43s would be scrap and the fewer Type 22s would be stretched even further before retirement.

1989 is a little early for the low-RCS gun shield, isn't it?

One excellent drawing. My thoughts go to the Harpoon launchers on the stern, whereas the drawing clearly shows the Exocet. The design, was a bit of a compromise, also trying to put too many in a hull not big enough. That resulted in the awkward position of the hangar - the pilots wanted it as close to amidships as possible, where ship's motion is less, the navy wanting a double ended ships and so on. Finally came sir John and scrapped the whole idea.
None the less a beautifull drawing BH :)
