Hi there,

here's my rendition of the "Zerstörer 1942", the first German destroyer class to be a Diesel powered.

There were four different designs ranging from the initial one shown below, to designs "A", "B" and "C".
These designs differed quite a bit in their armament and engine layout. The "A" design, for example, was to feature two twin turrets instead of the single 12.7cms in the fore and aft position. Later designs were to be fitted with radar equipped directors and a combination of new 5.5cm and 3cm light AA guns.

Of the class, only Z 51 was laid down in 1943 at the Deschimag in Bremen. She was launched in an incomplete state in October 1944. Most likely to clear her slipway for further U-Boat construction. Z 51 was badly damaged by bomb hits on 21st of March 1945 and was broken up after the war.

Here's a drawing of her as planned. Note the differences in AA armament and some other changes compared to the drawing above:

cheers!

Great to see this less known Type, which came almost in service. Great dipiction. When I remember right the diesel engine is still exhibited in the Speyer Technic Museum.
