Excellent work, I actually have a novel ("The Final Act") somewhere which has one of these being converted into a monitor. The details are in the opening post of this thread on the Secret Projects forum:

Fictional Warships - Novels

Hi,

another design study made in late 1940, called the "1940B":

Like the "1940A" it was designed with a mixed propulsion system of Diesel engines and steam turbines.
The armament returned to the classic eigth-barelled layout instead of the "1940As' " peculiar six-gunned design.

Main calibre was to be "bigger than 40,6cm", but since no other info is availabe, I decided to keep the 40,6cm guns in this drawing.

Stats according to german-navy.de:
Displacement: 70.000 tons
Length: 299,8 m
Speed: 32,3 kn

And as always: The reference material was a bit "basic", so some guesswork had to be done on this "never-were" drawing... ;)

Only the "H41" to go...

Thanks for looking!

As always, maomatic, that looks fantastic.

Would you be able to collect all of the drawings on the first post? It'd just make it easier to compare the various designs...

Regards,
Ad

Maybe some gun in the order of 43.2cm (17") would be applicable. Pretty much a standard layout otherwise. Though I would note the lack of aircraft which would be unusual for a German Capital ship design of the period.

Pity I have stopped the Dual Purpose KM, this would have fitted in nicely with a few 5" and 40mm.

A great drawing Maomatic, well up to the standard we expect of you.

Hi K,

From what I remember, it's less "no aircraft" and more "none specified on the plan" - maomatic's trying to be as faithful to the (fairly lightweight) plan as he can be, iirc.

Edit: Found it:

2. Airplanes:
Leaving off the planes was a conscious decision I made, because my reference picture was showing the ship without aircraft handling facilities. Not even a crane can be seen on the aft part like on the H39s.
I do believe however, that the ship would have been equipped with seaplanes.
That was about a different H-class but I'd imagine the same rules apply.

Hi,

thanks for the comments guys!

@ Adam:
Done, the first post has been updated.

@ Krakatoa:
Adam is right, I left off the planes, because the (crude) plans were not showing any. I don't like to add equipment that can't be found in my references, but I couldn't help to add a hangar door to the angled part of the superstructure next to "D" turret. I consider this to be some sort of compromise... ;)

Concerning the guns: I didn't want to speculate here. My references show turrets and guns that are a little bigger than the 40,6cm turrets I decided to use. The biggest calibre gun* the Kriegsmarine conceived as the 42 cm /48, which itself was just a rebored 40,6cm /52. So I didn't want to "invent" a gun and went with what was actually designed / built.
(*except the experimental 53cm gun that was built)

Hi Maomatic,

One other thing - I note that the base length on the rangefinders has gone up by 10-20% on the 1940B - any word on why? The turrets seem to be the same as on at least some of the earlier H-class, so I'm assuming a similar sort of range from the guns...

Cheers,
Ad

@Adam:
Good eyes!

Thats mainly because I wanted to keep the RFs matched to the turrets for the "40A", but decided otherwise for the "1940B". The "40A" has been updated with the correct (larger) RFs.
I believe this corellates to the intended use of bigger guns on the "H40" designs.
