there goes a story about a US Diesel-electric Submarine back in the day, got hunted down boy the Soviet Navy and had to surface after almost running out of air (it was almost inside the Soviet pacific fleet naval base!), the only message the American submariners got from the Soviets was: "thanks for the sonar practice, we escort you out of here"

But for the vessel itself; great work heuhen! As you always do... One question though: It does not look like icebreaking-capable vessel? "Icerunning" for sure...

well it's not a icebreaker, but it's ice-strengthened. It's going to manly patrol the North sea... are there ice out there...

No, they're mainly going to be patrolling the Norwegian EEZ which is in the Norwegian and Barents Seas, including around Svalbard where there may be drift ice. Hence the need for ice-strengthening.

I understand, but the previous Nordkapp-class seems to be more capable in ice; though I couldn't find any ice classes of it. This one seem to have ice class of Ice 1A*F (whatever it is...?) Is one Svalbard class OPV enough or is it useless overall?

in the 80's, when Nordkapp class was build, we didn't have a dedicated icebreaker in the Norwegian Coast Guard. Nordkapp class was build on a traditional hull, that are ice-strengthened with capability to do "ice browsing". however Nordkapp class, might be one of the best sea going boat in the Navy, it's the best boat to be on, during a storm. Nordkapp class patrols the Norwegian EEZ, which is in the Norwegian and Barents Seas, including Svalbard.

Jan Mayen class (the new coast guard vessel) have only a ice strengthened hull, it will do the same roll as Nordkapp class. (ICE-1A*F is the same as the Finnish ice IA Super), Since we have now an Ice-breaker in form of Svalbard class, that operate in the ice, we don't need Jan Mayen class to be an ice breaker.

One of the many reason for Svalbard class, was to make Norway present up there, but main mission is to help out scientists that work on the North Pole-ice

I talked a little with a former colleague of my stepdad. He didn't say much, we just talked about our memories from the past. But he said the Jan mayen class main ice breaking capability, will be by driving in reverse when breaking ice. thuse the two bridge configuration. In normal operation it will use the forward facing bridge, but when it's act as an ice-breaker, it will revers and thus use the aft bridge.

I think they reason for this is to relive Svalbard class during the summer periodes, when the ice is soft and thin.
