It has always amazed how much technology advances - the 1914 Derfflinger class battlecruisers are....... 210m in length while the Prinz Eugen class are.... 210m in length.

Could the Eugens been made to be upgraded to a twin 11". Would that have been a better or worse armament than the faster firing 8"?

Very nice work GD!

Dimensions according to Breyer's "Marine Arsenal Band 22 - Die Schweren Kreuzer Der Seydlitz-Klasse"

LOA with straight bow 207,70m CWL 199,50
LOA with atlantic bow 212,50m CWL 199,50

Breyer states Gröner and Koop & Schmolke as a source.

The above mentioned dimensions are identical to Prinz Eugen, which kind of makes sense I guess.

Edit:
Paul Schmalenbach gives the same data.

When I worked on the cruisers (and I still plan on updating my drawings from back then...) I planned on using the lenghts from the Marine Arsenal as well. It feels strange that it would have the excact same lenghts as Prinz Eugen, as Seydlitz was another (sub-) class, but I though that was as close to a correct lenght as it could get.

By the way, that drawing looks great!

@Krakatoa
Same length but it's weights that count. Derfflinger 31,000tons full; PE 19,000tons.
In D the weight goes into armour (heavy 12") and armament; in PE into power and fuel, and some to AA.
If you put twin 11" into PE - how many turrets? how many rounds per gun?
Will you armour the ship to resist 11" AP shells or leave PE with only 3" armour?

There is an interesting discussion somewhere in one of DK Brown's books as to whether dreadnoughts were weight limited, or in fact space limited by how the main armament turrets and their blast effects could be disposed along their length. D with only four turrets would be OK from that point of view.

Hello everyone!

Thanks for the comments, and thanks to Maomatic for nitpicking in a constructive way.

As for the length issue, I now think the 210meters are the figure for the straight bow version. This is based upon the fact that for the Aircraft Carrier version, a LCWL of 201,5m is given by Groener, which is 2 meters longer than Prinz Eugen's 199,5m. Adding the same bow and stern overhang, this translates to a LOA of 214,5m for Seydlitz, which is consistent with the higher normal displacement (the much higher full load displacement is due to a thousand additional tons of fuel). The pic has been scaled to 214,5m LOA now.

She looks pretty awesome.
Still, if you allow me a quibble, it appears the drawing lost the armor and bulge details below the waterline.

Great work GD (excepting BB1987's quibble)
