I can see now. Indeed, it might've ended up a complete failure if ever built. Very bizarre looking, and, in spite of Alvamas masterly treatment it was a hideous design!
But I appreciate the more in-depth insight into this odd design.

Streamlining was the main exterior design consideration. Even stranger: The plan was to have a flight deck running along the top between the funnels for mail planes. Yourkevitch tried to revive the design after WW2. It would have had only one funnel, on the starboard side.
